Just saw this OOH ad at a petrol station and it's confused me on a number of levels and I feel like I need some help from you all with your thoughts too ?? - It's steering people away from the mode of transport Esso need to make sales, and it's steering people away from the idea of using fuel... which is their product... (I realise most people will not get rid of their car because of this and this isn't their point, but it still feels like it questions my trust) - The shadow doesn't make any sense to me because it isn't what the bike provides for people, I can't understand the link between the bike and paddle board.. - 'Thoughtful Driving' kind of makes me feel that buying the fuel is not thoughtful driving and therefore points out to me that Esso is a bad company because they don't support thoughtful driving... overall a negative feeling towards them? The real purpose behind this campaign I guess is: A) I can imagine is it ticks some sort of BS environmental distraction from the fact their selling fuel B) it gets eyes on Esso because people just want the bike and puts them front of mind via applying It just feels like a quick turnaround campaign to tick some boxes and spend some budget... Am i missing something? Why has this Ad aggrovated me so much? ??

I loved it from the moment I saw a young fan give Mean Joe Greene a Coke, for MJG to then throw his jersey back to the young boy. The simplicity. The surprise. (He was actually nice.) The emotion. The joy. It jumped from the screen… to my heart, because that exchange created wonder for me. “I wonder if I could meet one of my heroes one day… and have a sweaty jersey thrown to me, too?! From advertising, to experiential, to social, to lifecycle… it ALL has the power to move people. That’s why I love marketing. The potential to move people to do simple things… and extraordinary things. This is also why I’ve chosen to not give up on an industry that I felt hasn’t pushed its potential like it once did. Instead of creating wonder, we’re trying to find absolutes. And if there’s one thing we know about consumers, we are all human. This means that we can be wildly moved by stories that hit us in the heart, not just our minds. I believe this is where brand marketing comes into play. We got played by a “PR professional” We fell for it, and it cost us big time. He delivered nothing but empty promises. Here is what happened: We were at Toy Fair New York. When a PR agent stopped by our booth. → The guy had a compelling narrative. → A list of TV shows to place our products. → A good pitch to do gift toys for Olympic medalists. Despite our tight budget and our funds were running low, I thought we had found our big break. I invested in the PR campaign. I sent a hundred units of “Katies” (our US shaped plush toy). But then, things went south. A snowstorm canceled the Olympic event, and the agent handed out our toys to random spectators. The cherry on top? Our PR guy just vanished. Instead of national exposure, we got a disaster. We never found him, and never got our money back. We learned the lesson the hard way. You don't have to. What can you do to avoid these traps in an ideal world? ?? Ask for references & success stories ?? Have clear deliverables in writing ?? Don’t commit to any money before the campaign Unfortunately, we don’t live in an ideal world. And many times the second bullet won’t make a difference, and the third one won’t be an option, particularly for a startup. We have to do the best with what we have.

If you're going to fight, fight early. Too many times we've seen prospects, clients and colleagues gloss over trouble spots and skirt reality in order to win business, keep the meeting going or avoid confrontation. Then later everyone wants to poke their eyes out when all of those issues surface mid-project. Deal with the difficult stuff at the start, even if it means you don't win the work or it slows a project down. And continue to deal with it as issues emerge. Clients and staff appreciate honest conversation. And this is most important internally.
