The Kagera region in northeastern #Tanzania, renowned for its #banana production, has faced persistent challenges with pests & diseases. FHIA hybrids, high-yielding, resistant varieties, were introduced in 1996 ?? The hybrids were tested by hundreds of farmers, with tremedous impact: ?? ? Farmers selected preferred varieties after two crop cycles and shared their experiences with others ? Over 50 multiplication and demonstration centers were established ? By 2012, smallholders had cultivated 6 million suckers of FHIA hybrids, achieving bunch weights of up to 150 kg! ?? The transformation didn’t stop at the farm. The video below showcases the entire banana value chain: ? Bunches are collected by motorcycles from farms; ? Transported to markets, and further carried by trucks to Lake Victoria; ? From there, they reach destinations as far as Dar es Salaam. Where there was once famine, a thriving commercial system now benefits everyone—from farmers to traders ?? This incredible project, funded by #Belgium and #Tanzania, stands as the world’s largest banana project impacting smallholders. FHIA hybrids, developed in #Honduras, have truly changed lives here, making Kagera a global success story in banana farming #AcceleratedBreedingInitiative International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) ??
