In honor of "Military Child Appreciation Month", I had planned to share resources and services throughout the month in support of this special population. First up, TRIO-Veterans Student Support Services, Pensacola State College. Did you know that Trio offers special supportive services for first generation college students, low-income families, and for those with disabilities? I know these aren't specific to military children BUT many parents are so concerned about splitting up their GI Bill, they don't consider other education options. ? Some service members never receive their degree, making military children potentially the first in their family. ? For some agencies, military income doesn't always count towards income, won't count food/housing, resulting in meeting a "low income" status. ? Military children aren't exempt from disabilities and may qualify for the services if they need special accommodations. When military personnel leave the service, their spouses play a crucial role in the transition process. At Leavers to Leaders Academy, we've witnessed firsthand the challenges Commonwealth families face - dealing with visa matters, finding new housing, and rebuilding their networks. That's why we involve the wives in our accelerator programme. This way, they receive the support they need during this challenging period, which can significantly impact the well-being of children and family life. By including spouses early on, we ensure they get the assistance required while being there for their partners. There’s a category of #military brats that are especially deserving of the nation’s recognition, gratitude, and serious study: the roughly 2 million Post-9/11 military children who experienced at least one if not multiple parental deployments—most often to theaters of #war—in the 20yr period after 2001. Already by 2011 (the formal end of the Iraq War), more than 4,300 of these children had had a parent killed in the Iraq & Afghanistan wars. As of 2015, that number had reached some 5,000. It’s difficult to know exactly how many American military kids are survivors or orphans of troops who were killed in the line of duty during the #GWOT, or who they are, let alone the total numbers of children survivors of all those who’ve served in the Post-9/11 era: There does not appear to be any type of database or central repository of information from which to find them. Surveying the past 35 years with the Lucas Group, however, the nonprofit Fallen Patriots has estimated that approximately 25,000 children have lost an active duty parent during that time (whether from accident, illness, hostilities, or suicide). The majority of these fatalities were their fathers. We owe a debt to these military children that goes far beyond media pronouncements and themed events once a year in April.

Operation Military Experience (Operation ME) is seeking military families to participate in a groundbreaking study about the long-term effects of parental deployment on adolescents. Led by the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University, this research focuses on families with two children (ages 11-16), one of whom experienced a parent’s deployment before age six. By completing surveys, interviews, and sharing service records, families can contribute to shaping future military support programs. Participants are compensated, and all responses are confidential.
