#NIU's article reporting on the significant improvement in physical activity of blind children once they began wearing Pediatric Belt Canes was just rejected from the Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness. The reviewers said it was wrong to suggest that the Pediatric Belt Cane was a safety device. It is interesting that the early childhood reviewers seem to doubt the necessity of assistive safety devices. Given current status of only handheld devices; they would have you believe that blind children enjoy bumper car mobility - where their bodies are the cars. Ask Mindy Jones, mother of 8-year-old Maddox- featured in this video. She began providing Pediatric Belt Canes since he was 2-years-old. She saw her son's walking was dangerous and the only way to improve it was to provide him with a physical barrier to protect and inform him about the path ahead so he can develop on par with his sighted peers. #JVIB #WhiteCaneSafetyDay - its in the name.
