I have a great idea. Reduce EQT executive compensation and increase every other employee’s compensation while still saving overall payroll costs. Employee compensation is spent at local retail establishments and professional services which is awesome for our economy. Less overall compensation costs equals more earnings to send to the owners of the company via dividends. CEO Rice, it’s a great idea. You can reach out to me and I can help. Imagine the great publicity from such a move. And you are most welcome. For your edification, surrounding yourself with a bunch of yes minions will keep your share price dropping. What toxic workplaces need to do and say. Here’s what officials from the toxic workplace that led to an employee’s suicide said about their employee’s death (read below in linked post): “We encourage any of you who are struggling with this news or experiencing any stress, depression and or anxiety to avail yourselves of the Employees Assistance Program.” This is code for “We’re not actually going to do anything real to address our toxic workplace, but please get some assistance to try and make yourself feel better about how we treat our employees as disposable units. Nothing matters more than the reputation of this company.” Here’s what they should have said (and done!): “We have fired the managers responsible for creating and sustaining a toxic workplace. We will not only work toward better policies, but will actually promise to take action to protect targets of abuse and hold their perpetrators accountable.” Anything else is token BS. There is no excuse for workplaces that kill people.

Suicide is not an uncommon outcome related to workplaces that do not support those who are different, it just feels that way because it is not talked about. While my employer has actively utilized all of their legal resources to deny defend and delay allegations that our workplaces create barriers that haem those who are differnent the impacts have been: Decreased mental health and productivity (not just for the person harmed - those on the outside who see and do not feel empowered to act also lose productivity). Self harm - often related to needing drugs or alcohol to cope. Emotional collapse. Mental breakdowns and leave. Permanent harm, including suicide that is the most permanent. We have DEIA plans as we realize we create barriers even when not intended - so why do we leverage all of the resources of our organizations against those who are brave enough to make visible what we say we need to change?
