Our Insight Analyst Bryony Perkins has highlighted October's shopper headlines, including our Shopper Confidence Index! ?? Confidence fell throughout the month as shoppers anticipated the Budget announcement. Despite this, festivities including Diwali and Halloween were enough to lift #confidence to the give the first positive read since July. Three seasonal events coming up could cause a spike in sales if you’re an eCommerce retailer – are you prepared? On October 31st it’s Halloween, celebrated the world over, but particularly in North America. In 2022, spending in the US on Halloween topped $10.6 billion and in 2023 it was $12 billion. Spending is also increasing each year on Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, a five-day festival which begins this year on October 29th. Again, the US market is growing – one survey revealed Diwali-related purchases in the US can account for up to 30% of sales during the holiday week for some online retailers. And Singles’ Day on November 11th is gaining traction. Originating from China, this day is becoming increasingly commercial, with single people buying gifts for themselves and others who are also single. In 2022, shoppers worldwide spent a phenomenal $157 billion on Singles' Day. If your sales are about to rocket because of Halloween, Singles’ Day or Diwali – possibly all three - are you confident you will still be able to meet your delivery promises to your customers? Why not talk to the team here at OCS, where we specialise in order fulfilment, shipping and delivery, particularly into the US. And – exclusively for our eCommerce partners – we can look after any returns too. Diwali is the season of gifting, and beautifully packed food hampers are a popular choice! But here's a quick tip to keep your loved ones safe this festive season: ??Always check the expiry date on packaged food items before enjoying or gifting them. It's not uncommon to find baskets with items nearing or even past their expiry date. Why is this important? ?? Kids especially love diving into these treats the moment they arrive, and expired products could pose health risks. How to stay cautious: - Inspect each item for expiry or best-before dates, especially sweets, snacks, and packaged drinks. - Educate family members to check before consuming – even if it's from a trusted brand. ?? A few seconds to check can make a big difference in keeping your festive celebrations safe and joyful. ??? Stay safe, and have a happy and healthy Diwali! ?? #diwali #happydiwali #safediwali #foodbites #foodtech #foodtechnology

Roots Revival It's really interesting to see how local brands are making a comeback and even outperforming multinational corporations. A top retailer in the country announced that the 2 highest selling product in a non-carbonated drink is a local brand selling coconut water. This category is dominated by powerful MNCs having celebrity endorsement with high decibel advertisements. Yet a local brand with local flavours was able to beat them. We saw a similar trend in the sweets/confectionary category too. While the chocolate category overtook the traditional sweets during Diwali few years ago, the traditional sweets have made a comeback to occupy their rightful place in people’s hearts and wallets. Consumers are increasingly valuing authenticity and local flavors in their products. They are looking for products that resonate with their cultural roots and traditions. Local brands that tap into these sentiments and offer products with genuine local flavors can capture a loyal customer base. By incorporating authentic local flavors and ingredients, they create products that feel like a nostalgic journey or a connection to heritage Local brands are not just relying on traditional recipes but are also innovating with modern packaging, flavors, and marketing strategies. This blend of traditional goodness with modern appeal attracts a wider audience. #retail #Sweets #Diwali #offlinestores I blog at https://lnkd.in/gsxSAGNy

Diwali: A Time of Joy and Rising Consumer Expectations in FMCG As the festive season approaches, the FMCG sector experiences a surge in consumer demand. Diwali brings not just celebrations but also heightened awareness among customers who prioritize quality and trust in the products they choose for their homes and families. In recent years, we've seen a significant shift in consumer behavior. Customers are increasingly opting for branded, non-adulterated products, appreciating the assurance of purity, hygiene, and transparency. This has led to a decline in the appeal of unbranded, open-market alternatives, as trust has become the cornerstone of purchasing decisions. For FMCG brands, this Diwali is a golden opportunity to not only meet rising demand but also to reinforce the commitment to quality and safety. Let's continue offering products that bring light and health into people's lives this festive season! ??? #Diwali2024 #FMCG #QualityMatters #CustomerTrust #NonAdulterated #FestiveSeason #ConsumerTrends #Gyandairy #CustomerCentricity

Council Urges Wise Spending During Diwali Season As the Diwali season approaches, consumers are urged to make informed purchasing decisions and stay aware of their consumer rights. While the festival of lights brings excitement and the spirit of giving, it’s crucial for consumers to protect their hard-earned money and ensure that their spending is both wise and meaningful. Last year, the Consumer Council of Fiji received a total of 163 complaints valued at just over $15,000 during the Diwali season, highlighting various consumer grievances. These complaints included issues such as the price of items not being displayed, discrepancies between displayed prices and what was charged at the cashier, and the sale of expired food products. Consumers also reported instances of contaminated food products, with some being infested with weevils. During the Diwali season, the Council has also noted one of the most prevalent concerns is price gouging, where products in high demand are subject to unjustified price increases. A recent example of this was observed a few weeks ago, when the prices of ghee surged significantly. Complaints about overcharging on regulated basic food items is also a recurring issue. As consumers prepare to celebrate this festive occasion, it is essential to prioritize financial well-being while enjoying the festivities. For additional information or to report any consumer issues, please reach out to the Consumer Council of Fiji at the Toll-Free National Consumer Helpline 155 or via [email protected].
