?? Advancing Energy Efficiency Financing in Indonesia On May 6, 2024, the project CASE collaborated with the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs and Bappenas' Directorate of Electricity, Telecommunications, and Informatics (KTI) to hold a pivotal Focus Group Discussion (FGD). This session focused on identifying funding mechanisms for energy efficiency—a critical component of Indonesia’s energy transition. The FGD served as a foundational step toward a synthesis study on global energy efficiency financing practices, aimed at drawing lessons for Indonesia. Through this dialogue, stakeholders explored barriers, opportunities, and actionable strategies to address financing gaps. ?? Check out the video to learn more about this important milestone! We are proud to have actively contributed to Electricity Connect 2024, a landmark event celebrating National Electricity Day, hosted by the Indonesian Electrical Power Society (MKI) with support from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) and PT PLN (Persero). Our Senior Partner, Kirana Sastrawijaya, as the moderator for Plenary Session 4: Project and Financing Corner, Panel Discussion Theme 1, leading an in-depth exploration of Navigating Challenges and Opportunities in Renewable Energy Procurement. The session featured industry leaders sharing insights on financing strategies, risk management, and innovative solutions from the perspectives of developers, sponsors, and private equity financiers, driving ASEAN’s renewable energy adoption. In the next session, our Managing Partner, Pramudya A. Oktavinanda, and Senior Associate, Angela Vania Rustandi, shared their expertise in the Knowledge Sharing Session II on Sustainable Finance Products from the Indonesian Law Perspective. Their presentation highlighted the pivotal role of legal frameworks in sustainable financing, focusing on regulatory compliance, innovative financial products, and structuring mechanisms that support renewable energy projects and Indonesia’s energy transition goals. We are honored to have participated in this prestigious event, fostering collaboration among stakeholders to shape a sustainable and innovative energy future. #WeSpeakYourLanguage

We often get questioned on flying around the world to work on industrial decarbonisation. While we do offset all of our travel emissions until there is a better solution of making no emissions to start with, that example in itself is why we get together to work on the problems. Coming together we make alliances, structure actions and align our efforts to transition from a large collective of well-intentioned activities, into a coordinated swarm of action to help industry decarbonise sooner. One thing is certain. New technologies are the path to a cleaner environmental future for the generations to come. And all new technologies that need to be developed and deployed on such a massive global scale require coordinated effort from multiple stakeholders, including governments, engineers and industry operators, in order to get them developed, invest-able and demonstrated, so that they can become a trusted solution for the world to adopt as a true solution. I know from past experience, these next three days will fundamentally change how effective we all are as individual actors in the global efforts to help accelerate industrial decarbonisation. #NIM #NetZeroIndustries #MissionInnovation
This week Australia and Indonesia are co-hosting the Clean Energy Ministerial Senior Officials' Meeting and Mission Innovation Annual Gathering. These forums bring together governments, companies, international experts and leading bodies from around the world to accelerate the #CleanEnergy transition. And with less than 70 months to go until 2030, the event is an important moment to take stock, assess progress and ensure that we are on the path to #NetZero ?? I am excited to announce the publication of my research paper, titled "Criticism of the New and Renewable Energy Bill in Indonesia within the Designing Effective Legislation Framework," in the Bina Hukum Lingkungan Journal, a Sinta 2 indexed journal. This accomplishment was made possible with the invaluable guidance of my supervisor, Dr. Sapto Hermawan S.H., M.H. In this paper, I evaluate the current regulations on new and renewable energy in Indonesia, highlighting their fragmented nature both horizontally and vertically within the legal system. Through the lens of effective legislative theory, the paper argues that the New and Renewable Energy Bill needs fundamental revisions in four key areas: purpose, substance, legislative packaging, and evaluation. I invite you to read the full paper via the following link: https://lnkd.in/g3wmbeD6

Delighted to share my opinion with Mardhiyyah Anggun on The Jakarta Post for the 6 June 2024 edition. We argue for the amendment rather than the revocation of Industry Ministerial Regulation No. 54/2012, proposing a gradual adjustment of TKDN thresholds for renewable energy projects to align with the readiness of Indonesia’s manufacturing industry. This approach could also address the challenges in meeting domestic product obligations required by Development Financial Institutions (DFIs). Happy reading! #PLN #JakartaPost #MinistryofIndustry #TKDNThreshold #EnergyTransition #SustainableActivity #RenewableEnergyProjects

?? On August 20th, the signing ceremony for the Indonesian local photovoltaic supply chain cooperation was held in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Wu Fei, Chairman of Suntech Power, Rachmat Kaimuddin - Deputy for Infrastructure and Transportation Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves) Republic of Indonesia, and Shinta Widjaja Kamdani - Coordinating Vice Chairwoman III for Maritime, Investment and Foreign Affairs of Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN Indonesia) attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. ?Shinta Widjaja Kamdani emphasized that Indonesia currently remains highly dependent on fossil fuels, especially coal, oil, and natural gas. This dependence not only poses adverse effects on the environment but also presents formidable challenges for Indonesia to build a more sustainable energy system. The transition to a low-carbon economy will be difficult to achieve without the widespread adoption of innovative clean energy technologies. Therefore, this requires the collective participation of all stakeholders. Indonesia must strive to create an environment that encourages innovation, incentivizes investment in clean energy technologies, and empowers consumers to make sustainable choices. ??Indonesian media reported on this grand occasion.? ??For more details, please see the video below. https://lnkd.in/gi4Zc8pk

This recent Op-Ed written by me and my colleague discusses how local content requirements could hinder financing and slow Indonesia's renewable energy project. We point out that the domestic preference principle of Development Financial Institutions (DFIs), which is preferred for financing renewable energy projects, does not align with the local content thresholds specified in Minister of Industry Regulation No. 54/2012. With recent news of the plan to revoke Minister of Industry Regulation No. 54/2012, we are of the opinion that it may not adequately resolve the issue and could potentially weaken local manufacturing standards. We suggest that amending the regulation would be a more effective approach than its proposed revocation. Enjoy the reading!
