Delighted to say I've completed a 5 week course in "Insights for Innovation" through IDEO U. I've been using IDEO's tools for years now but this is the first time I've studied with them and it was such an interesting course!! This course was very hands-on. I worked on a project around inspiring communities to adopt sustainable practices, eventually focusing on the journey of acquiring and passing on used furniture. I was tasked with gathering data through observation, interviews and empathy experiments and then synthesising the research into motivational and inspiring insights. It totally changed my understanding of what an "insight" is and should be used for... Key takeaways for me: ??While observing, look for adaptations which people have made in order to achieve something (this reveals an unmet need) ?? Allowing for "pregnant pauses" while interviewing to encourage your interviewee to fill the silence. ?? Empathy experiments are truly the best way of getting into the shoes of your end user, and give you an understanding on a whole different level than interviewing allows for! ?? Insights should be authentic, non-obvious and revealing ie. "News you can use" I honestly loved the opportunity to be a student again (and a teacher... peer-reviewing each other's assignments was a big part of this course) and can't wait to start using my new skills!
