It is not even a teen vs experience tussle! Poor time management and a lack of end-game mastery are some of my observations on the quality of play at the World Chess Championship in Singapore that has hit half time, with seven of the 14 games complete. On a mission to err..and err! The reigning champion, Ding Liren, and challenger D Gukesh, have been on a blunderous path in almost every game. That is only vindication of pre-match perceptions of some critics that the event is not seeing the world’s top two players contending for the title. Ding is ranked 23rd and Gukesh fifth, both not top-ranked in their own respective countries, China and India! It looks to me that FIDE has to revisit its qualification criteria to prevent a situation whereby the world champion is not the best player of the day. In yesterday’s marathon game 7, both the players were taking turns to commit mistakes, despite taking too much time for some moves. From my experience, overthinking is a distraction for focussed calculation and often leads to mistakes. Worse, the more time we take for a move the more time opponents get at our expense. Towards the end, Gukesh appeared well set to clinch a win, but one mistake after another enabled Ding to stave off defeat with a draw! #fide #chess #ding #gukesh

Gukesh Dommaraju, a teenager from India, claimed the title of youngest chess world champion at the age of 18. Gukesh defeated the defending champion Ding Liren from China in a thrilling conclusion of their 14-game match in the 2024 FIDE World Chess Championship held in Singapore. The 14th game appeared to be a draw, but Ding screwed with move 55, and, with no mistakes, Gukesh leveraged his miscalculation grabbing the title with a final score of 7.5 - 6.5. Gukesh has broken the record previously held by the legendary Garry Kasparov that had stood for nearly 40 years.? In the post-match interview, he said the kind of fight Ding gave him in the match truly shows that “Ding is the real world champion.” He further said, “Becoming the world champion doesn’t mean that I’m the best player in the world, obviously there’s Magnus [Carlsen], so it’s also a motivating factor.
