Black History Month: Founded for Us, By Us—And It Can’t Be Canceled Black History Month is not a trend, a favor, or something to be given and taken away—it is an essential part of American history. It was founded in 1926 as Negro History Week by historian Carter G. Woodson, a Black scholar who recognized the urgent need for African Americans to understand and celebrate their own contributions to society. Woodson, one of the first Black Americans to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard, dedicated his life to ensuring that Black history was not erased or overlooked. His efforts led to the expansion of Negro History Week into Black History Month in 1976, when it was officially recognized by President Gerald Ford. This month was created by us, for us, to honor our resilience, achievements, and the truth of our history. No one can “cancel” what has always belonged to us. The legacy of Black excellence is not up for debate—it lives on in our contributions, our culture, and our continued fight for progress. #BlackHistoryMonth #OurHistory #CarterGWoodson #BlackExcellence

Today marks the start of Black History Month in the UK! This October, we celebrate Black History Month by emphasizing the importance of correcting historical inaccuracies and highlighting untold success stories. This year, Black History Month is about reclaiming control of Black stories and honoring the complexity and richness of Black heritage. As we reflect on the achievements of Black people, we must also recognize the need to challenge and dismantle the historical narratives that have marginalized their contributions. By amplifying their voices and celebrating their impact, we honor the full spectrum of their leadership and pave the way for future generations to thrive. Let’s use this month to not only acknowledge the past but actively work toward a future where Black voices and stories are fully recognized and celebrated. #blackhistorymonth #bhm24 #reclaimingnarratives #blackstories

Indeed we Celebrate Black History Month, Honoring Black Excellence in Leadership and Trading Standards Black History Month is a powerful time to celebrate and reflect on the immense contributions of Black individuals across all sectors. One area often overlooked in these celebrations is the vital work done by Black professionals in Trading Standards, a field that plays a critical role in protecting consumers and legitimate businesses alike. These leaders ensure fairness in the marketplace, upholding the integrity of commerce while safeguarding the public from fraudulent practices. As the first Black Chair and Director for the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, I have drawn inspiration from pioneers like Alleyne Fontenelle, Vince Riviere, Jacob Chanda, Chuma Akpon, Earl Legister, Robin Jones, Valerie Simpson , Sandra Bennett, Nishi Patel, Ash Shah, Karen Tillet, to name but a few serving at our Local Authorities. These individuals not only broke through barriers but also became beacons of excellence and integrity, showing what is possible for Black and Asian professionals in a field that has traditionally lacked diversity. Their legacy is a testament to perseverance, vision, and leadership in a profession that is fundamental to both economic justice and public safety. Despite the challenges we face as Black people and leaders, systemic inequalities, bias, and often being the "first" or "only" in certain space, we continue to rise, making lasting contributions to our professions and communities. In Trading Standards, this has meant navigating complexities with tenacity, protecting consumer rights, and ensuring that businesses operate fairly and within the law. It is a field that requires not just skill and expertise, but also a commitment to justice and fairness. This Black History Month, as we celebrate the achievements of Black individuals across the globe, we must also recognise the often unseen work done by Black leaders in professions like Trading Standards. These leaders, both past and present, have paved the way for future generations, proving that excellence is possible even in the face of adversity. I am truly grateful for their example, and I stand on their shoulders as we continue to push for greater representation and equity in all fields. Let this month serve as a reminder of the power of Black excellence, not just in the high profile spaces, but in every corner of society where we work to make a difference. Through our courage and vision, we continue to thrive and lead, ensuring that our communities are protected and that future generations have role models to look up to. Let us love one another. Together we stand. #BlackHistoryMonth
Celebrating Black History Month! ?? Today marks the beginning of Black History Month, a significant period for reflection, celebration, and education about the diverse history and contributions of Black individuals both in the UK and globally. It presents an opportunity to meaningfully learn about the varied experiences of the Black community, whilst honouring the often-overlooked achievements and understanding the struggles of people of African and Caribbean heritage. This year’s theme centres around ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ and emphasises the importance of acknowledging and correcting historical accounts of Black culture and heritage. It paves the way for a more accurate representation of Black people and challenges the misconceptions that have persisted over time. Black History Month is a time for reflection, celebration, and education. It honors the legacy of Black pioneers, the rich cultural heritage, and the ongoing fight for equality. For me, it’s an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations that highlight the contributions and struggles of Black communities throughout history. It’s a platform to speak, share experiences, and inspire positive change, while recognizing that these discussions are vital year-round. Speaking during Black History Month offers a chance to empower others, foster understanding, and remind us of the collective responsibility to uphold justice and equity for future generations. Here is a sneak peak into one of my keynote addresses for Black History Month titled: Breaking Barriers, featuring one of my favourite role models - Kofi Annan Kofi Annan, the first Black African UN Secretary-General, made a profound impact on global diplomacy and peacekeeping. Advocating for human rights, conflict resolution, and sustainable development, he strengthened the UN’s role in addressing global crises. His leadership and vision remain a powerful legacy in Black history and world affairs.

Black History Month is an annual observance that celebrates the contributions, achievements, and history of African and African-descended people, particularly within the context of the African diaspora. It is recognized in several countries, though the timing varies: ? United States and Canada: Celebrated in February to honor African American history and culture. ? United Kingdom, Ireland, and the Netherlands: Observed in October, with a focus on the contributions of Black communities in these regions. The origins of Black History Month trace back to 1926 when African American historian Carter G. Woodson established “Negro History Week” to ensure that Black history was taught and valued. This initiative expanded in the 1970s to the full month we recognize today. Black History Month serves as a time to educate, reflect, and celebrate the achievements of notable Black figures—scientists, artists, activists, writers, leaders—and also as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward equality and justice. Through various activities, from school programs to public events and media tributes, it encourages everyone to appreciate the contributions of Black communities worldwide.

In October, we celebrated Black History Month. While I recognise that it’s neither fair nor feasible to capture the entirety of Black history in just one month, it's crucial to embed marginalised voices meaningfully within the mainstream curriculum. Rather than surface-level additions, we need deep, impactful changes. I enjoyed planning poetry lessons that featured renowned Black authors like Benjamin Zephaniah, Derek Walcott and Grace Nichols. Students were inspired by stories of remarkable Black change makers and engaged in rich, thought-provoking discussions. They are, in many ways, more open-minded and inclusive than adults, which makes it essential to continue these important conversations year-round, rather than reserving them for just one month. When all voices are genuinely heard and represented, there will be no need for special occasions or months to highlight them. It is essential to decolonise the curriculum. Our classrooms should be culturally responsive, psychologically safe spaces that foster inclusion and belonging. Did you learn anything new during Black History Month? :)

??The Black History Month is not a marketing strategy to advance your diversity agenda. Black History Matters. Today, I am reminded of a quote by Susanne B. Anthony that I have adapted for this post. ??"One day, we will be noticed, and everyone will think it has always been this way. Just as many young people today believe that all the privileges Black people possess today have always been ours. Every inch of ground we stand on was gained through the hard work, contribution, and sacrifices of great women and men in the past and present." ??To create an equitable future, we must be aware of and acknowledge the influence of Black people on the past, present, and future. Our stories need to be told and heard to promote understanding of our societal norms and constructs. This month is meant to highlight, recognize, and celebrate the contribution of Black people in the world. ??Without our history, we ultimately lack our identity. The Black History Month Matters. #BlackHistoryMonth #Leadership #WhatInspiresMe
