Since the beginning of the year, there's been plenty of talk about the "urban doom loop" threatening American cities and what this phenomenon might mean for cultural organizations. The urban doom loop is a condition wherein a city's financial health spirals downward in a domino effect affecting not only the downtown area's attractiveness to residents and tourists but also its ability to function effectively. Urban cultural organizations may well be concerned about the implications. As people relocate to the suburbs, office vacancies rise, and perceptions of crime increase, will cultural audiences be deterred from visiting? We're watching intentions to visit urban cultural organizations. See the data - and what it means for cultural leaders - on KYOB. Sign up or log in to read more. https://lnkd.in/ewbVijqA

Why southern Europeans will soon be the longest-lived people in the world. The urban design in Spain, with its emphasis on #density, #walkability, and #communalspaces, is highlighted in a recent article. This design not only boosts physical health by encouraging more activity but also fosters social connections. These social networks play a crucial role in enhancing psychological well-being and ultimately, longevity.

Amongst many other benefits, urban greenspace is increasingly seen as potentially supporting social integration of different groups. We interviewed 261 foreign-born immigrants in Sweden (i.e., new-Swedes) in eight different towns to explore which types of greenspace they prefer and why. Our results indicate that new-Swedes’?UGS preferences are broadly comparable with those of the general population in Sweden. We found little evidence to suggest that ethnocultural factors played a major role in their preferences.?The majority of respondents were satisfied with the quality (73%), availability (68%) and accessibility (76%) of greenspace in Sweden. Most interviewed new-Swedes were frequent users of a wide spectrum of UGS types, with the most preferred types including forests, large parks and lakes. The below article is a good primer / reminder on why and how the success of regions (including those that are rural) is tied to central cities. In other words, we're all in it together and looking the other way hurts everyone... https://lnkd.in/ehCTduF6

Do you want to live in the city or in the countryside? This question was asked in a panel discussion a while ago. You can't answer yes or no to that. It depends entirely on the kind of city or countryside. There's no point in building a confrontation about which is better. Perhaps we are more divided by the need to be with people, how often and where. Many of us share a longing for nature and a need for security. These can happen in cities as well as in rural areas. For me, the city is often the best place to live if it offers an urban space for people to meet each other by chance, then a new energy is created. That city is not just about driving from place a to place b. It is also about respecting different people and cultures. For me, the countryside is a good place to be if there is a community, people to share nature with. Community creates security. In all places it is important that the people who live there want to and can influence where they live. So I guess the answer to that question is simply I want to be in a place where there is a strong community. Ultimately, it's a real privilege to be able to choose where you live. Most people in the world can't do this. Many people choose the place where they have the best chance of survival. Hopefully, in the future, as many people as possible in this world will be able to choose where their home is.
