?? All countries should learn from England how, through great strategy and investment, they can transform the future of women’s football. The Lionesses’ win at UEFA EURO 2022, and their journey to the final of the FIFA World Cup 2023, helped ignite unprecedented interest in the women’s game. For the first time ever, the women’s game has taken centre stage and begun to command the same respect as the men’s game. ?? To celebrate the Lionesses latest successes, ￡25m from the Government and ￡5m from The FA was committed to supporting the improvement of at least 30 facilities across the country. The grants will help to provide women and girls across the country with gold standard facilities and experiences, with priority access for women and girls through reserved peak-time slots and welcoming changing rooms. ? Since the Lionesses lifted the EURO trophy in 2022, 68,000 more girls are playing football compared to before the tournament. However, too often, badly lit pitches, unsuitable changing facilities and late-night kick-off times put women and girls off taking to the pitch. ? Yesterday, Arsenal defender and Lionesses captain Leah Williamson returned to her home-town to celebrate the opening of The Leah Williamson Pitch at Newport Pagnell Town FC, one of the half of sites to receive Lionesses Futures Fund grants. ?? "It’s a safe space and space where they’re the priority, that’s abnormal so to speak, it’s not a competition, just the facilities to play. If we take that option away from them before they even begin - what are we doing? One day it will be normal and we won't have prioritisation, we’ll have boys and girls on that pitch all the time," said Leah Williamson.

As a professional sports club aiming to boost fan attendance sustainably, there is a psychological shift induced by charging even a nominal fee, such as $1, or ￡1 for those reading in England :) Having seen many free ticket campaigns offered by sports clubs only have a minimal short-term impact on attendance, this small fee can significantly alter the dynamics of the social contract and commitment between the club and its supporters. #QPRFC's 2022-23 accounts have been released. The club is currently languishing at the wrong end of the #EFL #Championship table which is a far cry from the go-go days of Premier League football just over 10 years ago. The club's historical financial transgressions have been well documented but our attention is drawn to the longer-term trend of consistent economic losses and with data drawn from our own vysyble Football Profitability Index, a very clear downward trend since 2016-17 in economic efficiency. When we see such trends outside of football, the end is never far away. Indeed, we are reminded of such trends with Carillion and Thomas Cook. Additionally, it is not so difficult to see why #PremierLeague clubs are stalling over a reformed monetary distribution plan given that it is one group of loss-achieving clubs subsidising another larger group of loss-achieving clubs, the constituents of which are spending money they haven't got in order to be members of the first group, as seen below...

"Where on the field is the $1 I'm paying for soda?" A famous scene from Moneyball where newly acquired DH David Justice asks why General Manager Billy Beane charges for soda in the club house. Jonah Hill's fictionalized character Peter Brand replies that "Billy likes to keep the money on the field" While the ownership of the soon to be Las Vegas A's is notoriously stingy, this scene was actually total creative liberty but it made a point that is relatable to many who work in the nonprofit world. When staff at nonprofits are forced to work with broken chairs, slow computers, and chronic understaffing, these things don't actually put more money into the program. They're symbolic sacrafices to demonstrate commitment to fans (donors) and more often than not management. There's a reason professional sports teams don't try and save money by having their players workout at local High School gyms. The reputational damage would make it more difficult to recruit players. What do we think it does to employee recruitment and retention in the nonprofit sector when the industry is defined by symbolic (and sometimes quite literal) vows of poverty? Great missions require great people and resources that allow them to perform at their best. Your soda money doesn't end up back on the field but it can pull money off of it if your badge of honor sacrafices conribute to employee turnover.
