February is Low Vision Awareness Month! This week, we wanted to highlight Stargardt Disease. Stargardt Disease is a genetic eye disease that results in progressive vision loss. The disease affects the macula region of the retina, which is responsible for central vision and visual acuity. People with STGD usually begin to experience vision loss in early childhood or adolescence. However, some people with STGD do not experience vision problems until they are adults. I've heard of measuring a patient's breath to understand lung volume, and breathalyzer tests for drunk drivers, but this is the first I've heard of a "breath biopsy" in a clinical trial... In addition to microbiome and alcohol, I wonder if we could use AI to analyze chemical compounds in a patient's breath and match it profiles of metabolic byproducts of disease, for early detection? After all, if dogs can sniff out cancer, why not this? (Visual: dogs standing in the unemployment line due to AI. We would have to upskill them to label training sets of breath data ??)
