Building a Sustainable Future: The Power of Life Cycle Assessment ?? Did you know that a building's environmental impact extends far beyond its construction? ??? Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a powerful tool that helps us evaluate a building's full environmental footprint, from material extraction to demolition and disposal. By understanding this entire lifecycle, we can make informed decisions to minimize our impact on the planet. ?? ? Key benefits of LCA: ? Identifies environmental hotspots ? Enables informed material and design choices ? Promotes sustainable practices throughout the building's lifecycle ? Let's work together to build a more sustainable future! ?? #SustainableFriday ?????????????????????? ???????????????????? ???????? ????????????????????: ?????? ?????????????????????????? ?????????????????? ???? ?????????? ?????????????????? ?? Fascinating article about Bosco Verticale, a building covered in plants and trees that reduces #energy consumption, pollution, and improves air quality! While Bosco Verticale boasts innovative #design features that benefit the #environment, its construction also required more building materials, leading to higher embodied #emissions. This highlights a key challenge in sustainable #architecture: achieving a balance between innovation and efficiency to minimize environmental impact throughout a building's lifecycle. ?? ?????????????? ?????????????????????? ???? ?????? ???????????? ????????????? ????’???? ?????? ?????? ??????????????! If you've been struggling to wrap your head around low carbon design and its practical applications, you're not alone. The good news? HERA has heard the call and is running a series of workshops designed to demystify the process and provide you with a clear, actionable understanding of low carbon design principles. This is based on our building research levy (via BRANZ) and steel research levy (via HERA) supported project titled "Circular design for a changing environment: a design framework to reduce construction waste, lifecycle embodied carbon, and to enhance the circular economy for construction materials, with a pilot for low-rise buildings". This introductory session will cover everything from understanding life cycle assessments to applying circular design strategies. Led by our General Manager of Structural Systems, Dr. Kaveh Andisheh, and Associate Professor Helena Gervasio from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, these workshops will equip you with the tools and confidence you need to start making impactful, sustainable design choices. ?? Being held across the motu in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, and Hamilton, these sessions are tailored to address the common challenges professionals face in adopting low carbon design. Don’t miss your chance to get ahead—find out more and register to attend. Let’s turn uncertainty into expertise! ?? https://zurl.co/LyAt - #HERA #LowCarbonDesign #LifeCycleAnalysis #CircularDesign #CircularEconomy

Thank you Kara Thompson for this neat summary of the recent City Architecture Forum event on retrofit and reuse of buildings. As it says, the statistics I presented on "the state of the circular economy" were... depressing! Yes, the construction industry generates 62% of the UK's waste and 32% of all waste sent to landfill. Crucially, 13% of construction materials are diverted straight to waste without being used. What I want to spur on in our sector by baring the hard truths, is simply less talk and more action in this area. Such an uplifiting conclusion too : With a focus on circular economy practices, flexible design solutions, and proactive engagement with stakeholders, the possibilities for transformation are endless. It's time to dance to a new tune and create a built environment that not only meets our needs today but also ensures a sustainable future for generations to come. #CityofLondon #CircularEconomy #ReuseRevolution

?? Let's build a brighter future together! As architects, we have a crucial role in shaping the world around us. It's time to take action for the environment and sustainability. ??? Incorporating green design principles into our projects can make a huge difference. From using renewable materials to maximizing natural light and ventilation, small changes can have a big impact. ?? Let's rethink our approach to construction and design. By prioritizing energy efficiency and reducing waste, we can create buildings that are not only beautiful but also eco-friendly. ?? Education is key! Let's inspire the next generation of architects to think sustainably from the start. By sharing our knowledge and experiences, we can foster a culture of environmental responsibility in the industry. ?? Together, we can build a world that works in harmony with nature. Let's take action today for a greener, more sustainable tomorrow. #Youngchamps #GreenArchitecture #Sustainability #BuildingForTheFuture ??

A project by GXN summarizes important circular sustainability principles. This project promotes a more sustainable approach to the design of buildings and landscape projects. These principles emphasize the importance of resource management, reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling resources to create circular sustainability. This approach helps businesses and individuals minimize their environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future. Additionally, these principles encourage collaboration and innovation in finding new ways to design products, manage resources, and create value from waste.? #sustainability #circulareconomy #innovation #collaboration #buildingdesign #architecture #landscapearchitecture

Debunking the Myth: Sustainable Development is NOT Always Costly! I recently attended a seminar on Green Building and LEED for homes, and I'd like to share a key takeaway: sustainable development doesn't have to break the bank! The myth that sustainable development is costly can be a significant barrier to adoption. However, the truth is that it's all about making informed decisions and balancing variables to achieve your desired performance. By playing with different variables such as: - Materials selection - Building orientation - Insulation and windows - Renewable energy systems - Water efficiency measures You can create a high-performing, sustainable building that meets your budget! In fact, many sustainable design elements can actually save you money in the long run through: - Reduced energy consumption - Lower water bills - Increased property value - Improved occupant health and productivity Don't let the myth hold you back! Embrace sustainable development and create buildings that are not only environmentally friendly but also economically viable. #Sustainability #GreenBuilding #LEED #MythBusting #SustainableDevelopment #EcoFriendly #BuildingDesign #EnergyEfficiency #WaterConservation #RenewableEnergy
