40 TRILLION GALLONS OF WATER FROM HELENE. UNPRECEDENTED. Asheville was the place we'd been looking to retire to for it's music scene (all my favorite alt-indie bands go through there), its eclectic, just-right sized downtown, and because it seemed like a good place to avoid the worst of climate change in the coming decades. We sold a place on the Atlantic coast in Florida several years ago because the water during even minor tropical storms was starting to get too close for comfort and you can't get flood insurance there. And after seeing several shows in Asheville over the years we fell in love with the scene there, figuring that this would be the spot to head to in retirement, or at least have a second place there for weekend get-aways and summers out of Atlanta. But now it seems that we all have to take the "retreat from climate change" bit out of the pro's column when looking at new places to move to. Because what we just learned was that there's only ever been one real solution to climate change - rapid decarbonization. Which we're too late on, so now it becomes not only decarbonizing to mitigate the intensity of future storms, but also what can we do from an urban planning and civil engineering perspective to beef up resilience to catastrophic flooding, wind damage, etc. hundreds of miles inland. The costs of this are incalculable and we're going to need the brightest minds coming together between both the public and private sectors to start building (and agreeing) on plans to safeguard us from this mess we've created.

#HurricaneHelene has left a trail of devastation across multiple southeastern U.S. states, with the full extent only becoming clear as isolated towns regain communication. The rapid intensification of #storms like Helene is something we’re seeing more frequently, and experts warn this could become the new norm as #ocean temperatures continue to rise. As areas of Far North Queensland are still recovering from flooding caused by Cylcone Jasper and Kirrily, we look at how #earlywarnings can help business and communities prepare for severe weather, minimise risks, and ensure a faster recovery. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by Hurricane Helene and those working tirelessly to support the affected communities. https://lnkd.in/gkgiKJis Image credit NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration

ESG Performance Management // Pathways to Net Zero // ESG Risk Management & Strategy // Climate Risk Strategy
Let’s project 2, 5, 10 years into the future. In England, Africa, South America, wherever you are. Towns and cities which were previously safe from flooding and drought, are underwater or bone dry. People like you and I are moving around with the possessions we can carry. Life as we know it is disrupted. Evacuation teams and emergency supplies are stretched to capacity. We wish that we put more pressure on our companies, while we could, to focus on reducing their environmental impact, faster, and instilling its importance within the governance of our organisations… As employees and consumers, we need to be asking our employers, the businesses we buy from, our local authorities, and our governments, what they are doing to protect us from climate change… because if you look around, you will see the above disruption is already happening. Reach out to sustainability professionals, environmental analysts, friends who work in the sustainability sector to learn how to bring this up in your organisation if it’s not being prioritised. Because really, action is in our hands as individuals. As more people begin to sing the same tune, it gets louder, and eventually they won’t be able to ignore it.

While markets get giddy on AI and interest rate cuts / speculation - the real risk is punching us in the face on a daily basis -? #environment #esg #lowcarbon #assetmanagement
Hurricane Beryl’s arrival?marks an exceptionally early start to the Atlantic hurricane season.?Having reached Category 4 strength yesterday, it became the strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded in June. Scientists have identified clear connections between human-caused global warming and the increasing severity of tropical storms. Since the 1970s, about twice as many storms are spinning up into Category 4 or 5 cyclones as before and according to scientific reports its nearly three times as likely that an Atlantic-born tropical cyclone will wind up as a hurricane?as it was three decades ago. #hurricane #risingsealevels #oceanwarming

Tropical Storm Debby is causing severe flooding and widespread destruction in the Southeast of the USA after making landfall in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane. This storm has already caused six fatalities in Florida and Georgia, left over 150,000 customers without power, and damaged significant infrastructure, including downed trees and power lines. The storm’s rapid intensification and unprecedented rainfall highlight the increasing severity and frequency of extreme weather events due to climate change. The destruction caused by Debby underscores the urgent need for stronger climate policies and actions to mitigate these effects. October 2 segment by William Brangham, PBS NewsHour. Description - Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida but towns hundreds of miles from the coast have seen some of the worst destruction. Communities once considered ‘climate havens’ are facing a harsh reality, there may be no such thing. William Brangham discussed the impacts of a warming world and what individuals and communities can do with Alex Steffen, writer of the newsletter, "The Snap Forward." #climatecrisis #flooding #extremeweather #climatehavens #alexsteffen #pbsnewshour

"Safety is unaffordable in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and other Small Island Developing States" This is one of the realities we face. Hurricane straps are expensive. Hurricane ties are expensive. Galvanized Screws and fasteners made for storm force winds are expensive. Concrete roof expensive. Heavy Gauge Roofing Galvanize expensive. My country lacks updated Building Codes and Standards and this is partially to blame for what Hurricane Beryl did to Union Island and other Islands... But that's because updating and enforcing our standards at price poor people out of having the basic means to live. Being Ready is Expensive. Building Back Better is Expensive. This is money we just do not have. This is a reality we face. This should be an imperative conversation for your organization and for all partner nations to those SIDs who will be facing the brunt of climate related meteorological storms. Otherwise, year after year, "dem go lick we up and mash up ting".

Cherri-Ann Farquharson, Capacity Development and Gender Expert at The CCREEE, recently appeared on 'The Conversation' with Kwame Thomas to discuss the urgent need for improved climate resilience in the aftermath of the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl. Ms Farquharson discussed the factors that contributed to Beryl's rapid intensification, how this compares to historical hurricane patterns and the long-term implications of more frequent and powerful storms because of climate change.
