ICAP's Karampreet Sachathep, PhD and a team of co-authors including colleagues from ICAP, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and the Cameroon Ministry of Health have published a paper on the seroprevalence of COVID-19 in #Cameroon, which was affected more than most countries in Africa: https://bit.ly/3TAKcEL The study found almost 100 times more cases compared to the number of cases reported to the World Health Organization. It highlights the importance of conducting serosurveys, especially in settings where access to testing may be limited. #GlobalHealth #COVID #COVID19 Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health - Department of Epidemiology

World Field Epidemiology Day ?? Today, we honor the tireless work of field epidemiologists around the world, those at the frontline of safeguarding public health and preventing the spread of diseases. As a passionate advocate for One Health and a public health communicator, I am deeply inspired by the immense contribution of field epidemiologists to bridging the gap between human, animal, and environmental health. Field epidemiologists are vital in addressing zoonotic diseases, combatting antimicrobial resistance, and improving disease surveillance globally. Their efforts underscore the importance of a One Health approach in tackling emerging and re-emerging health threats. On this special day, I celebrate all field epidemiologists who dedicate their lives to research, data collection, and real-time responses to epidemics and pandemics. Your work ensures a healthier, safer world for us all. Let us continue to support, collaborate, and innovate for the advancement of global health! PS: This picture was taken during my field outreach at the Kaida Community to take animal samples for detection of Antimicrobials. Could crowdsourcing revolutionize public health in Lebanon? At the recent innovative idea fair at Phoenicia University, I proposed EpiAlert, a crowdsourced disease surveillance app designed specifically for Lebanon. This app has the potential to leverage technology to improve public health outcomes. Traditional passive disease surveillance often struggles to keep pace with the rapidly evolving infectious diseases. This results in an incomplete picture of their actual spread, hindering timely and accurate outbreak detection. EpiAlert uses real-time, anonymous user-generated data on symptoms and location. This data, linked to the Ministry of Public Health’s Epidemiological Surveillance Unit, would be analyzed by advanced machine learning algorithms to detect outbreaks in a timely manner and inform public health responses. Ultimately, this innovative app empowers individuals to contribute to public health and ensures a healthier future for all. #Epidemiology #Surveillance #PublicHealth #AI #Innovation #Project

In the rapidly evolving field of global health, the emergence of infectious diseases like monkeypox and COVID-19 poses significant challenges. ?? Although both are viral pathogens, they differ greatly in epidemiology and clinical presentation. Monkeypox is mainly spread through direct contact, while COVID-19 is transmitted via respiratory droplets. ?? Timely and accurate diagnostics are crucial for effective public health responses. ??? In this context, Babio provides robust rapid testing solutions for both monkeypox and COVID-19, empowering healthcare practitioners with tools for early detection and improved epidemiological surveillance. ??? #InfectiousDiseases #GlobalHealth #Monkeypox #COVID19 #RapidDiagnostics #Babio

As the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in 2020, the importance of identifying viral hotspots before they become visible in clinical data and tracking the spread of infection across populations became clear. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) can provide invaluable insights into public health by monitoring biomarkers found in sewage. We delivered a range of WBE work packages for the UK and Welsh Governments, developing innovative digital tools, models, and sampling techniques to enable the source-tracing of outbreaks of COVID-19 through wastewater sampling. In the latest issue of the Arup Journal, we explore our WBE work and how it enabled the health monitoring of over 80% of the Welsh population.
