Herbal/Prescription Interaction Awareness Month is a great reminder about the potential for herbal supplements to interact with prescription medications harmfully. And to highlight the importance of a continuous open dialogue between patients and healthcare providers about dietary supplements. This?is especially important for those taking an investigational medication through a #clinicaltrial. For example, goldenseal and St. John’s wort are reported to have a high risk of drug interactions. They should be avoided in combination with most over-the-counter and prescription medications. In 2024, a survey by the Industry Transparency Center on the frequency of dietary supplement use worldwide found that ‘once a day’ was the most common response, including 60% women aged 55+. Moreover, the quality feature "???????????????????? ??????????????" is relevant for 66% of the women surveyed in the study when deciding which dietary supplements to buy. However, a?study by Daitch et al. (2022) found that “the overall median enrollment rate of women was 41%” in 300 randomized controlled clinical trials. A large analysis found that daily multivitamins do not reduce the risk of death in healthy adults. There was no difference in mortality from any cause, including #cancer, #heartdisease, or #cerebrovasculardiseases, between those who took multivitamins and those who didn't. The results accounted for race, ethnicity, education, and diet quality.
