One of the key benefits of a simple idea is that it makes it easier to understand, and once you know it, the simple idea is also easier to share.
Helping techies level up in their careers by developing their non-tech skills | Engineering Leader & Certified Career Coach | Country Director GWTL | ex-Thoughtworks
Until you get this you cannot advance in your tech career: It does not matter how well you know something if you can’t explain it to others! Common responses I get: ????: I work alone as a independent contractor Me: but you have clients that you have to agree with on timelines and requirements right? ????: I take care of my task and the rest have to take care of theirs Me: and what happens when you have to integrate your work? ????: It’s the tech lead / PM job to talk to other teams or stakeholders? Me: but you still have to explain it to them right? Me: for senior devs: How sure are you about it? Have you read your job description? ?? ?? What other examples do you have? ?? #softwareengineering #tech

Hiring external software developers can bring fresh perspectives and specialized skills to your projects. And it can be more cost-effective. According to a Deloitte survey, 59% of businesses are currently outsourcing some form of IT services. External teams can provide expertise that may not be available in-house and can scale with your project’s needs. This flexibility allows businesses to adapt quickly to changing demands and market conditions. Moreover, external developers often come with a diverse range of experiences across various industries, bringing innovative solutions to the table. The Hardest Part of Hiring Great Software Engineers—And How to Fix It Hiring great developers is tough. It’s not just about skills—it’s about finding the right fit. And getting it wrong can be a costly mistake. Even the best coders can hold your team back if they lack communication, teamwork, or adaptability. Here’s how to hire engineers who are great at coding and working with others: ? Make sure their goals match your team’s mission and values. ? Look for clear, concise and thoughtful answers during interviews. ? Let them meet key team members to check if they fit your culture. ? Use tasks that match real team challenges to test their problem-solving skills. ? Don’t rush. A bad hire creates more problems. Wait for someone who fits well. When you hire carefully, you build a team that works well together, solves problems, and achieves great results. What’s the hardest part of hiring for you?

The job system is broken. Sometimes we have to be different. Here’s how I helped a client land an opportunity at her favourite clothing company. We basically use cold email. 1. Target the right people → We focus on individuals who are one level above the role we’re aiming for. → For example, if applying for a Software Engineer position, we’d look for Senior Software Engineers on LinkedIn. → Those people often play a big part in the hiring process! ?? 2. Find their email: → Use this formula to predict their email: First name.last [email protected] → I also use tools like Apollo.io to locate accurate email addresses. 3. Craft the First Email → Avoid directly asking for a job. → Instead: Demonstrate the unique value you can bring to the company. → Research the company’s needs and create a portfolio showing how you can address their challenges. 4. Show the respects at the end of the email → Add a Polite Touch: “Thanks you for reading this email and I know your time is valuable!” This approach shows proactive and professionalism which can set you apart in a competitive market. If you need any help in your creative job application, DM me "Career" ??

When should you think you are a staff software engineer? Here is my two cents: - You have a working knowledge of almost all the tech stack that the project relies on. - You have gained expertise in more than one field over the course of your career. - You have been a senior software engineer for more than 3+ years with a total of 7+ years of experience in the industry. (This is debatable. Depth and breadth of experience matter more than the specific number of years.) - You care more about technical stuff than people management. - You can set the technical direction for the current or any new project. - Your work impacts not only your team but also other teams. - You don’t bind yourself to any particular technology. - You can guide any stakeholders if needed. - All the senior engineers look up to you. This is a generic template for a staff engineer. But, there might be cases where someone is only staff in one area. That will depend mostly on the product and team size. For example, a staff engineer in iOS means that a person has more in-depth knowledge of iOS than any senior iOS engineer in the team. #SoftwareEngineering #TechLeadership #CareerDevelopment #SoftwareEngineer #TechnicalLeadership #SeniorEngineer #TechCareer #EngineeringLeadership #EngineeringGrowth #CareerPath #StaffEngineer #ProfessionalDevelopment

Specific skillset Product Manager job alert! You could be me (but better probably) at Honeycomb. Read on for info. We are seeking 2 (two) (for different teams) Technical Product Managers. Key note! I am NOT the hiring manager. I'm posting the job at the request of one of our recruiters because our recruiting team is delightful and I enjoy helping them. Read this post and if you or someone you know fits the profile, send them my way, I can refer good candidates to the roles! These roles will be similar to my job—you need to have engineering experience. We work in very technical spaces where you have to understand code, infrastructure, and the way that production services work. Having been an engineer (I was a frontend eng for 9 years before moving into PM) will be critical in these roles. You'll be working to define the roadmap for infrastructure-level products and teams. But also, it's a real Product Manager role—Honeycomb serves a wide variety of customers from early stage startups to Fortune 500 companies—and we're constantly trying to identify solutions that help software engineers build faster, with confidence. We regularly face situations where the "best" solution is unclear; we have competing business needs, user needs, and team capacities. This is not a project manager role, you'll need to ramp up on the domain, our customers, and your team to find the right solutions that generate the user outcomes your team is driving towards. Honeycomb is still relatively small (less than 250 employees) so there are immense possibilities for you to collaborate and drive value across the company. In my role, I am regularly context switching from working closely with engineers to sort through technical issues we're facing in code, to sharing our roadmap with customers and prospects, to working with leadership to define strategy and build alignment. If this sounds interesting to you or sounds like someone you know, feel free to message me directly! I'll put the job post in the comments so you can read it, but as mentioned above, I can refer you directly to the job, no cover letter or application needed! EDITED TO ADD: Honeycomb is not able to support H1B visas, so candidates do need to be US or Canadian citizens.

I have been recently involved into actively #hiring at multiple software levels and found this insight: Applications that I received for Senior Software position were ~13 times less than the applications I got for Jr. Software Engineer. And Applications that I received for Lead Software positions were ~7 times less than what I got for Senior Software positions What do you think this insight mean? I'll let the audience make out the meaning. #apuravwrites

Fascinating chart on software dev job postings over the last 4 years. It's a tough job market out there for software developers... While all of this remains true: 1: Every company wants to become more digital, not less 2: Software development is a more important capability for companies than ever before - often, a strategic differentiator (think, automotive). 3: The pressure on development teams is only increasing. So what's behind this trend: Overhiring? Inefficient teams? CFOs scrambling for budget cuts? Talking to CTOs, I see a little bit of it all.
