Was anyone else treated to a spectator sky and the sheer beauty of the Aurora Borealis last night? These photos are just a glimpse of some of what I got to see in and around the village I live in last night ?? All of this got me thinking more about our #environment, the natural world, #climatechange, #biodiversitynetgain and how the #property and #construction industry I work in impacts on all of this. Here at The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) in partnership with Content With Purpose we have recently released 'The Nature of Building: Biodiversity and the Built Environment'. This is a series of digital content exploring the powerful relationship between construction and biodiversity, shining a light on the #strategies reshaping the industry to mitigate its environmental impact. As an industry we need to shift from seeing #nature as a risk, cost, something adding additional maintenance requirements to instead seeing it as an integral part of project success with the need to start embedding the voice of nature in the decisions that we make. There are so many lessons to take away from this year's Jellicoe panel discussion, not least of all is that landscape professionals’ expertise can help other industries to deal with, capture and store carbon, whilst simultaneously delivering a range of other benefits. As the landscape sector takes an integrated, holistic approach to project design and build, it can tackle climate challenges head-on, and help sequester carbon, while also realising multiple secondary benefits at the same time. However, there are still challenges. When it comes to the amount of carbon generated by landscape projects, schemes and works, the sector must do better. Currently, there is a general lack of consistency and no guidance or regulation. The 'Landscape and Carbon' report, released during Jellicoe, provides a path forward with 8 key recommendations and an open invitation to join the conversation, contribute your ideas and experiences, and make a difference. Find out more about the report, recommendations and ways to contribute here: https://buff.ly/3VbxKxB Thank you so much to all the panelists at this year's Jellicoe - Claire Thirlwall, CMLI BA(Hons) Dip. LA, Sian Berkley, Stephen Duce and Wayne Grills - as well as Carolin G?hler for moderating this fascinating discussion. #landscapearchitecture #landscapedesign #carbonneutral #netzerocarbon #jellicoe #embodiedcarbon #landscapeandcarbon Landscape Institute British Association of Landscape Industries

A major change in the approach to sustainable planning is taking shape with the introduction of biodiversity net gain regulations. They aim to ensure that natural habitats are protected and improved when new developments are undertaken. This will help combat climate change, safeguard the environment, and encourage green construction practices. Taking prompt action is essential. According to The Biodiversity Intactness Index (2021), by the Natural History Museum, global biodiversity has already dipped below safe thresholds. The research reveals the UK has only half of its entire biodiversity left, ranking it within the bottom 10% of the world's countries. In steps to address these risks, we’ve been extensively researching and developing ways to produce and blend minerals and soils. Our range of tailored biodiversity solutions help developers and contractors to protect the environment and precious resources. Whether it's enhancing biodiversity, implementing land remediation projects, green construction methods, or wildflower planting initiatives, we're here to offer our expertise. The unique surroundings of an old Victorian brickworks and ash pit, provides an ideal backdrop for our sustainable mineral solutions. For further details about the new environmental legislation, its implications and how we can help, explore our latest blog post. https://lnkd.in/eHZJXhJ9 #BiodiversityNetGain #biodiversity #SustainablePlanning #ClimateSolutions #InfrastructureSolutions #NaturalHabitats #LandRemediation #GreenConstruction #CarbonCapture #WildflowerMeadows

Nature is speaking, and we all should listen because it has some important things to say! It can be said louder but not clearer: nature doesn’t need people, but we need nature, and our future depends on it. Similarly, infrastructure is essential for the survival of human societies worldwide. Infrastructure is everywhere, and it is critical to ensure economic growth and social development. Ironically, despite how crucial these two elements are for societal survival and thriving, poorly planned and designed infrastructure can profoundly and devastatingly impact nature and the planet. In fact, infrastructure is one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss. The good news is that infrastructure can also play an instrumental role not only in reducing environmental impact but also in conserving, enhancing, and restoring natural ecosystems. While their potential has yet to be fully exploited, alternative approaches to traditional infrastructure, like nature-positive infrastructure and nature-based solutions, show how infrastructure can integrate environmental considerations and sustainability into infrastructure projects and do its part in this complex global endeavor. It’s time to rethink our approach to development to ensure infrastructure and nature coexist harmoniously, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future for all. https://lnkd.in/dgwqmd8y Sint Maarten Must Pivot to Sustainable Development Amid Environmental Concerns and Climate Uncertainty - StMaartenNews.com "The first step towards sustainability is to halt the overbuilding and ecological destruction currently underway. Planned developments threatening our last mangrove strands exemplify the type of short-sighted decision-making that can no longer be afforded. Our natural coastal and terrestrial resources such as mangroves, are not just critical buffers against hurricanes; they also support biodiversity and help in carbon sequestration, making them invaluable to a small island developing state like ours. Our utilities infrastructure, already struggling under the existing load and still struggling with issues as basic as billing, is a clear signal that our public infrastructure cannot support further large-scale development. This situation underscores the need for a comprehensive carrying capacity study to guide our development choices responsibly." What is NBS? It appears to me in this Nordic Nature Based Solution conference that the umbrella concept is very confusing, this Wikipedia mapping gives some clarity, indeed it is confusing! "Categories The IUCN proposes to consider NBS as an umbrella concept.[13] Categories and examples of NBS approaches according to the IUCN include:[13] Category of NBS approaches Examples Ecosystem restoration approaches Ecological restoration, ecological engineering, forest landscape restoration Issue-specific ecosystem-related approaches Ecosystem-based adaptation, ecosystem-based mitigation, climate adaptation services, ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction Infrastructure-related approaches Natural infrastructure, green infrastructure Ecosystem-based management approaches Integrated coastal zone management, integrated water resources management Ecosystem protection approaches Area-based conservation approaches including protected area management"

We are delighted to announce that a short film we co-produced with Shoal Conservation and The Nature Conservancy is now being featured in an exhibition at the MK&G (Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg) showing until October 2024.? 'Protect Inland Waters' is a call to action from Indigenous peoples around the world for policymakers to take the steps needed to save our freshwater ecosystems.? Initially premiered at COP15 in Montreal, the film calls for more to be done globally to protect the rivers, lakes and wetlands that so many people and species depend on. ? ? The exhibit, “Water Pressure: Designing for the Future”, and examines the water crisis from an international perspective. Displaying ideas and proposals that illuminate the potential for shaping a radically different future, it presents pieces under the following themes:? “Water Stories” illuminates the cultural significance of water and presents the many ancestral and indigenous practices that are providing inspiration for nature-based solutions today. “Bodily Waters” is about our and other species’ intimate connection to water inside and outside the body. “Thirsty Cities” looks at water management challenges and the innovative solutions being tested. “Invisible Water: Agriculture and Industry” introduces new concepts in agriculture and industrial production that use less water to help catalyse systemic change. “Ecosystems: Land and Ocean” explores how policymakers and designers are implementing alternative approaches that help to restore the balance between humans and nature. ? ? ??It's World Environment Day?? We always discuss how we, as a business, are continually seeking out more environmentally friendly routes we can take, whether it's related to product, our operational footprint, or our partnerships and business choices. A day like today for us, is an opportunity to bring about awareness to this topic, and reiterate the importance of looking after our environment ?? This year's World Environment Day campaign focuses on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration." ?? ??Our most recent advance in environmental projects is our support of the reforestation of a nine-kilometre section of the banks of the Maskeliya Oya in the Maskeliya Upcot Valley. A memorandum of understanding entered into by Traffi and PLANT envisages the regeneration of forest cover on 30 to 50 feet wide continuous strips of land on the opposing banks of the waterway. Five project segments combine, forming a nine-kilometre forest corridor that will create over 50 hectares of new forest, with one of these segments funded by Traffi ?? #Traffi #WorldEnvironmentDay #Environment #Nature #EnvironmentDay
