The next UK General Election is on the horizon – which means now is the moment to ask the country’s political parties to commit to taking the actions needed to reduce armed violence and the impacts of conflict on communities worldwide. Gun violence is a emotional topic, made even more so by recent events - but campaigns aiming to change policy struggle to cut through. Can nationalism do it? #Guncontrol #advertising has tried a lot of ways to stoke the necessary and continued outrage to prompt change in the country. However, national pride and guilt is a new one. This campaign from Change the Ref asks foreign families to consider adopting a US child to save them from the epidemic of gun violence. It’s not only a smart idea aimed right at national identity, it has similarities to a successful idea from a small town in the 1970s. Vulcan, West Virginia had requested a bridge be built and lacking support from the government, they petitioned for foreign aid from the USSR - a move that once publicised spurred immediate action from state governments (the full amazing story is here: https://lnkd.in/eKCMMn92 ). While Change the Ref faces an exponentially larger task, one hopes this is the start of a successful continued strategy to change public action on gun violence. https://lnkd.in/ezXe4nEd

The America Israel Political Action Committee (AIPAC), which lobbies for pro-Israel policies, is spending USD 177, 000 per hour to unseat a member of The Squad in New York state. Their efforts to unseat him have made this the most expensive primary in US history. The outsize impact of AIPAC and big business on government is contributing to the lack of confidence in democracy and capitalism throughout the West. https://lnkd.in/gu-i9qNm

A Suicidal Coalition which is unnecessary I agree with the assertion made by the author here but for reasons different to what he outlines It would be suicidal for the ANC to go to bed with the DA with objectives contrary to the revolutionary party. These two parties have nothing in common and share nothing regarding how the country must move forward. If a coalition with MK and EFF does not work out it would even be necessary to rerun the elections. How does a party that seeks to separate the Western Cape from S Africa, a racist party that bought votes represent the interest of the majority which are jobs, jobs jobs? A coalition with this party which is a modified version of the Afrikaner Resistance Party would be a sell-out out and any justification by the neo-cons will not save the country well. The ruling party (ANC) must start making bold decisions to change the country's trajectory to empower the majority of the black populace. Land Reform must be on the forefront and good management and accountability must become a mantra of the coalition government. This election was a warning to the ANC that if nothing changes they will become history.
