The first episode of Our Help Us Save Lives TV show is SAAD; Suicide Awareness and Depression. Both end lives prematurely. When ending pain overrides living longer, people die. I've been there, I know that pain. I'm alive today because my 23-year-old son thought enough of me to call 911 when no one else would when my marriage of 24 years ended. I wanted to end the pain, but he and others helped me realize that no woman or broken relationship was worth dying for. No bankruptcy, hopeless situation, job loss, addiction, bullying, abuse, or losing a loved one is worth dying for. The ultimate irony is I produce documentaries about suicide awareness for a living, and STILL faced that same issue myself! Trust me, it can happen to anyone, at any time! NO ONE is immune. The emotional side of our brain CAN override the rational side, and sometimes you THINK ending your life is a good solution when the thought of the future is bleaker than the enormity of the present. When people think death anywhere else is better than life here, they often choose death. I am here because of the love of my son, who ironically turns 23 years old today, on his birthday. Without him, I wouldn't have lived long enough to see this day and celebrate his joy in growing up. In our TV show, we interview those who have overcome depression and the temptation of suicide, to learn how they did it and what WE can all do to help those struggling with these life-threatening issues. Why? Because those who have already left us cannot speak for themselves any longer. Everyone who dies, especially by suicide, leaves someone behind to deal with their decision. We explore ways to help save lives. You never know when it may be YOU we are trying to save, or keep alive, so you can enjoy the birthdays of those you love. Somewhere around the world, another person takes their life every 40 seconds, so in the time it took to read this post, another person ended their life and in total, over 800,000 people die by suicide every year. Today I explore the concept of keeping our feet firmly planted on the earth. I’ll discuss my recent experiences with vestibular therapy which has challenged my commitment to this new way of life just in simply practicing self-restraint to save myself from future symptoms. This translated clearly to me how what we do today impacts how we feel tomorrow. In recovery, there's a saying about "Keeping your feet planted on the earth.” And then if I focus keeping my head where your feet are I am staying present, focused, and engaged with my recovery and where I’m at each day. Over time, the things I do in recovery—these daily practices and decisions—start to shift from mere actions to integral parts of our identity. If I focus on the next right thing, I am present and helping my future self. If I future trip, I’m stealing away from my future self. Reflect on how your actions within your recovery are shaping your identity. Are they just tasks, or are they stepping stones to a new version of the person you are becoming? Recovery is building a life where our progress and successes are merely aspects of a new richer, fuller identity.
