An important case for clinical logic and intuition in modern medicine. “Measurements, numbers and images cannot fully explain another person's health, illness, and experience. As we bathe in the blue light of our computer screens, we must continually ask seemingly simple questions like “How does the patient look, and what seems to be the key issue?” At Clint, we are pioneering an approach to data-driven medicine that aims to blend the technology and touch that truly defines the art and science of medicine.
In the data firehouse that is modern medicine, we must guard against the McNamara fallacy – that “if it cannot be measured, it is not important.” ? In this sharp, concise NEJM essay, an infectious disease physician explains that when she responds to consult requests by asking, “How sick do they seem to you?” the requesting physician commonly responds, “The white count is up. Should we broaden antibiotics?” ? As patients and clinicians pour over data in real-time, we (understandably) obsess over particular objective but highly nonspecific results – e.g., leukocytosis, elevated inflammatory markers, and hypoalbuminemia. ? Yet we pay too little attention to the “seemingly squishy but highly informative subjective impression of severity of illness as felt or seen by the patient, their family, and the treating clinical teams.” ? As a gastroenterologist who mostly cares for adults with chronic, non-specific symptoms that are not explained by diagnostic tests, I’m admittedly naturally attuned toward the subjective. ? But even still, regardless of specialty, numbers and images cannot fully explain another person's health, illness, and experience. ? The point is that as we bathe in the blue light of our computer screens, we must continually ask ourselves seemingly simple questions such as, “How do they look?” “What seems to be the key issue?” ? Likewise, we must ask our patients questions that cannot be answered in the EHR results section, such as, “How are you feeling?” “Any change since we last met?“ And “How is all this affecting your daily activities and quality of life?” #modernmedicine #patientexperience #healthcareonlinkedin https://lnkd.in/gekCG7BY

I'm pleased to announce the publication of my latest systematic review titled, "Effectiveness of Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Physical Therapies in Peripheral Arterial Disease with Intermittent Claudication". This comprehensive review evaluates the impact of various complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practices, alongside physical therapies, on the management of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) with intermittent claudication. Our findings provide valuable insights and evidence-based recommendations that could enhance treatment approaches for this condition. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to my co-authors and collaborators for their dedication and hard work. Your contributions were instrumental in making this review possible. ??
