Meet Dr. Ken Mackie, a Distinguished Professor, and Dr. Feng Guo, an Associate Professor at Indiana University Bloomington. Dr. Mackie and Dr. Guo are working on a device designed to prevent overdose deaths in high-risk individuals taking prescribed high-dose opioids, especially those who may overdose in unmonitored settings, like while asleep. This device includes sensors to monitor breathing and heart rate, a microneedle patch to deliver naloxone when needed, and an app that tracks vital signs and detects potential overdose risks. If an overdose is detected, the patch automatically administers naloxone and alerts first responders. By focusing on those under medical supervision, they aim to reduce overdose deaths without encouraging recreational opioid use. Welcome to #I4SUD2024, Dr. Mackie and Dr. Guo! #OpioidCrisis #OverdosePrevention #HealthcareInnovation #Naloxone #PatientSafety

What is Naloxone? And how does it save lives? Naloxone is a safe medication that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. It has been used for over 40 years in emergency medicine. Naloxone can quickly restore normal breathing to a person if their breathing has slowed or stopped because of an opioid overdose. It can quickly wake someone up in just a few minutes. VitAL's Project FREEDOM provides training and free naloxone to first responders. One of the more challenging scenarios in the ED is when patients with #opioidusedisorder refuse care, such as when they want to leave immediately after an #opioid overdose reversal with #naloxone. I was fortunate to be a part of this new article, along with Ken Marshall, Arthur Derse and Josh Joseph published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine, which provides a practical ethical framework and guidance for these situations. A key recommendation is provision of withdrawal management with #MOUD. From the paper: "In other words, ED-initiated #buprenorphine might help restack the motivational deck both immediately and during the days after ED discharge in which the risks of recurrent overdose and mortality remain high." https://lnkd.in/e-gG-3Hi

This clip features Dr. Steven McCarus discussing the high exposure of women to opioids in medical settings, particularly after procedures like hysterectomies. He highlights the issue of excessive opioid prescriptions leading to unused drugs lingering at homes. Dr. McCarus suggests that addressing this problem requires dedicated champions in hospitals to advocate for women's health, monitor opioid use, and enforce responsible prescribing practices. Opening the Door: Stopping Pain Before It Starts and Breaking the Opioid Chain Early, abundant, and clear access to MSK solutions is essential for reducing negative downstream impacts, particularly opioid use and abuse. ?? Prioritizing early entry into clinical pathways, reducing uncertainty, and expanding treatment options can help prevent passive coping, self-medication, and opioid dependency. ?? The digital front door is a crucial primary access point, and the tools for digital MSK solutions are already in place. ?? To maximize engagement, it’s vital to educate consumers on the value and utilization of these digital solutions. Engaging patients with knowledge and accessible options can drive meaningful change in care and outcomes. ??? #PTfirst #digitalfrontdoor #MSKCare #DigitalHealth #OpioidCrisis #PatientEngagement #HealthcareInnovation #FutureOfCare @rehabthinktank
