What is Naloxone? And how does it save lives? Naloxone is a safe medication that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. It has been used for over 40 years in emergency medicine. Naloxone can quickly restore normal breathing to a person if their breathing has slowed or stopped because of an opioid overdose. It can quickly wake someone up in just a few minutes. One of the more challenging scenarios in the ED is when patients with #opioidusedisorder refuse care, such as when they want to leave immediately after an #opioid overdose reversal with #naloxone. I was fortunate to be a part of this new article, along with Ken Marshall, Arthur Derse and Josh Joseph published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine, which provides a practical ethical framework and guidance for these situations. A key recommendation is provision of withdrawal management with #MOUD.
