Numerical Weather Prediction has been one of the standard workloads of #hpc for decades. And my Colorado neighbors over at NSF NCAR - The National Center for Atmospheric Research have been key to advancing research in this area. One of their most popular developments in support of these efforts is the open source Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, with > 50k users from over 160 countries. Extreme weather conditions that saw heavy rain, storms and floods hit multiple countries in the Middle East have increased concerns for ocean and air freight in the region. Dubai has experienced considerable delays and backlogs, which could take up to a week to clear up and return to normalcy. This is where atmospheric model simulation comes into play. By performing large scale simulations on Amazon Web Services (AWS) HPC clusters in the cloud, built using Amazon EC2 P4d instances and powered by Nvidia A100 GPUs, we can get a better understanding of our atmosphere and the environment as a whole. #AIforScience #HPC
