The retail sector is closing out 2024 with troubling signs, as highlighted by the liquidation of Party City and Big Lots locations during the holiday season. This year has seen a sharp rise in retail bankruptcies, with 49 filings compared to 25 in 2023, according to Coresight Research. Store closures have also surged, exceeding 7,300 compared to 4,627 by this time last year. Recent developments include The Container Store filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection just before Christmas and Nordstrom announcing plans to go private amid ongoing revenue struggles. These trends underscore the mounting challenges facing brick-and-mortar retailers in an increasingly competitive and shifting market.
