?? NEW PAPER: A study into the use of neutrons to learn the porosity of sedimentary rock has been published. Led by researchers at the Technical University of Munich, and supported by #LyellCentre experts Dr Clayton Magill and Prof. Andreas Busch, alongside Jingsheng MA from the Institute of Geoenergy Engineering, the team used small angle neutron scattering instruments to quantify and measure pores (some no bigger than a few nanometres) in mudrock from Europe and America. The technology revealed that the proportion of clay minerals in the sediments, on top of other factors, was crucial to their porosity and ability to store carbon. The results of the study will help identify suitable sedimentary rocks for nuclear waste repositories and CO2?storage sites. In recent years, scientists have successfully put theoretical physics to work by extracting more energy from a fusion reaction that they originally put in—an achievement known as “ignition”. As you can probably imagine, the environments inside these artificial stars are some of the most intense on Earth. On this day in science Alfred Nier was born Nier was a pioneer in the field of mass spectrometry. Using a mass spectrometer of his own design, Nier produced a sample of uranium-235 to be shipped to?John Dunning’s?team at the University of Columbia, at?Enrico Fermi’s?request. In doing so, Nier’s team also showed that the uranium isotope responsible for nuclear fission was uranium-235 rather than uranium-238. He later worked at the Kellex Corporation to develop mass spectrographs that were used for the production of the American atomic bombs. He developed a new instrument having higher resolution than previously available for such studies and undertook the determination of accurate isotopic abundances for five elements, namely argon, potassium, zinc, rubidium, and cadmium. Well said ... "It is easier to fool people, than it is to convince them that they've been fooled," wrote Mark Twain." The harm that society expects from ionizing radiation does not match experience. Evidently there is some basic error in this assumption. Specialized education and closed groups of experts tend to lock in interdisciplinary misperceptions. In the case of nuclear technology, the resulting lack of independent political confidence endangers the adoption of nuclear power as the replacement for fossil fuels. In the long term, nuclear energy is the only viable source of large-scale primary energy, but this requires a re-working of public understanding.
