?? Exciting News from ANSTO! ?? The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) continues to lead in atomic research, enhancing human health, saving lives, driving industrial growth, and protecting our environment. Their Australian Synchrotron in Clayton, Victoria, stands as a cornerstone of Australia's scientific infrastructure, utilising electrons accelerated to near light speed. However, this remarkable facility has substantial energy needs, demanding an innovative solution to curb costs, power critical research, and achieve ambitious sustainability targets. Enter our game-changing recommendation: a 1.59MW rooftop solar system! ?? This massive installation, one of the largest in Victoria, features over 3,000 panels across ANSTO’s buildings within the Monash University precinct. This includes the Australian Synchrotron, the guesthouse, and the environmentally controlled storage facility. RACV are proud to support ANSTO in their mission, harnessing the power of solar energy to fuel groundbreaking research and contribute to a sustainable future. #Sustainability #RenewableEnergy #SolarPower #Innovation #ANSTO #ScientificResearch #EnergyEfficiency #SolarSolutions

https://lnkd.in/gsbab5N3 Great read, and not just for the solar junkies; easily digestible with some far-out hopes, but mostly achievable or likely outcomes. I'd like to highlight a couple key quotes: 1: "The challenge of optimally angling panels to absorb the maximum amount of sunlight has been such an intimidating technical challenge, it has inspired a whole subfield of machine learning, but these days, given the price of those panels, it doesn’t seem to matter all that much." This is a clear nod to what we're doing at Erthos. As the panels get cheaper, why burden yourself with complicated machinery to get the most out of them. Too much cost incurred and risk introduced for too little gain. 2: "“the biggest investment opportunity in history,” the entrepreneur Casey Handmer listed about a dozen pie-in-the-sky applications, including...scaling up the production of carbon-free synthetic fuels to power industrial decarbonization..." I wouldn't exactly categorize this one as "pie-in-the-sky". It's already here. Many pilot projects doing exactly this with Erthos' Earth Mount solar solution are well poised to start proving out this very concept. We'll undoubtedly be seeing them come online in 2025 and scaling way up throughout the rest of this decade. Here we go!! Come visit us at #RE2024+ Booth#A63077

??California set new solar energy records in April, exceeding 100% of state demand twice, with a peak at 123.9%! Then, on April 21, nighttime battery electricity output reached a new record of nearly 6.5 gigawatts (6,500 MW) on California’s power grid. That is the equivalent of the output of more than seven nuclear reactors. This move towards 100% renewable energy showcases significant progress, promising a sustainable future. #SolarPower #RenewableEnergy

? Solar and wind can *augment* hydrocarbons and nuclear. ? But solar and wind _cannot_ *replace* hydrocarbons and solar. Anyone who claims otherwise is either energy-illiterate or delusional. Or a part of the Biden administration, in which case, they are likely both. That said, here is an article from 2009 which presents a plan to power the entire world 100% using only wind, solar and water resources, by 2030. And eliminating all oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy. So I would say the authors are *both* energy-illiterate and delusional. ======================== "Wind, water and solar technologies can provide 100 percent of the world's energy, eliminating all fossil fuels. Here's how. In December [2009] leaders from around the world will meet in Copenhagen to try to agree on cutting back greenhouse gas emissions for decades to come. The most effective step to implement that goal would be a massive shift away from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy sources. If leaders can have confidence that such a transformation is possible, they might commit to an historic agreement.?We think they can. ? A year ago [in 2008] former vice president Al Gore threw down a gauntlet: to repower America with 100 percent carbon-free electricity within 10 years. [by 2018] As the two of us started to evaluate the feasibility of such a change, we took on an even larger challenge: to determine how 100 percent of the world’s energy, for all purposes, could be supplied by wind, water and solar resources, by as early as 2030. Our plan is presented here. ... Renewable energy comes from enticing sources: wind, which also produces waves; water, which includes hydroelectric, tidal and geothermal energy (water heated by hot underground rock); and sun, which includes photovoltaics and solar power plants that focus sunlight to heat a fluid that drives a turbine to generate electricity. Our plan includes only technologies that work or are close to working today on a large scale, rather than those that may exist 20 or 30 years from now. [...] < snip endless delusional blatherings > ? ... A large-scale wind, water and solar energy system can reliably supply the world’s needs, significantly benefiting climate, air quality, water quality, ecology and energy security. ??As we have shown, the obstacles are primarily political, not technical. A combination of feed-in tariffs plus incentives for providers to reduce costs, elimination of fossil subsidies and an intelligently expanded grid could be enough to ensure rapid deployment. Of course, changes in the real-world power and transportation industries will have to overcome sunk investments in existing infrastructure. But with sensible policies, nations could set a goal of generating 25 percent of their new energy supply with WWS sources in 10 to 15 years and almost 100 percent of new supply in 20 to 30 years. ..." https://lnkd.in/eQfieyRj

Why some technologies are always ten years in the future? Yesterday, "the EU Blueprint for Fusion Energy" held in Strasbourg discussed the ways how fusion energy could be brought to market. The quest for a safe, clean and affordable energy is a long-standing challenge and transformative solutions would be essential in the fight against climate change. However, some technologies always seem to be 10 years in the future regardless of how much we invest in getting them to the market. Let's take an example of #fuelcell #technology, where interest have fluctuated based on the geopolitical situation and macrocycle. I had the opportunity to drive on the streets of Brussels in a fuel cell car in ~2008, but the fuel cell cars have not taken off, but always feel ~10 years in the future. On fusion, the Executive Vice President of the European Commission Maro? ?ef?ovi? highlighted an important aspect of technology development. It needs collaboration. Technology does not develop in isolation, rather it is systemic - a part of a societal and technological system. If the new piece of technology does not fit the existing system, it will be a up hill battle to get to the market.
