Last week, I hit up the Art Institute of Chicago @theartinstituteofchicago and?wow! I was completely blown away by the Thorne Miniature Rooms! ??? These tiny, insanely detailed rooms are like stepping into a time machine. Created by Narcissa Niblack Thorne in the early 1900s, they’re mini replicas of European and American interiors from the 13th century all the way up to the 1930s. Think intricate furniture, tiny decor, and architecture so spot-on it’s mind-blowing. ?? For my photography project, I wanted to capture the magic of these miniatures, focusing on how light plays with all those delicate details. I played around with angles, exposure, and settings to really bring out the depth and realism of each room. It was all about highlighting the warmth, mood, and history packed into every tiny corner. ???? This project totally changed how I see light—it’s not just about brightness, but about telling a story. It sets the vibe, draws your eye, and makes you?feel?something. Shooting these rooms was equal parts technical challenge and creative exploration. It reminded me how much photography and painting have in common—both use composition, contrast, and light to pull you in and make you connect with the art. ??? Honestly, this experience has me looking at?all?art differently now. It’s not just about snapping a pic—it’s about capturing the emotion and story behind it. As a photographer, bathrooms present an interesting challenge. Often they are quite small, making it difficult to maneuver, plus the added problem of mirrors and other reflective surfaces. The lighting, especially if the room has a window, is often composed or a number of different colors. The goal becomes "how can I maintain the feel and atmosphere of the design (with the multitude of light colors), but balance out the image so it's not a distraction?" In this case, the bathroom was a clean bright marble texture, with 3 different colors of light. I can photoshop out mirror reflections, but I find it much easier, and more accurate, to just make a photograph of what the mirror reflects (the wall behind me), and fill that into the mirrors. architect: John P.
