On this Indigenous Peoples Day, we honor Florida’s Indigenous communities and their deep connection to our state’s waterways and ecosystems. Florida's state parks, like Jonathan Dickinson, which are caregivers to Florida’s first federally designated Wild and Scenic River, the Loxahatchee, are not just recreational spaces—they’re vital for preserving cultural and natural resources. As we reflect on Indigenous wisdom, let’s commit to protecting these precious resources: 1)Practice Responsible Recreation: Respect water sources and habitats when visiting parks. 2)Join Clean-Up Efforts: Participate in volunteer days to help maintain our waterways. 3)Support Indigenous Stewardship: Engage with Indigenous-led conservation initiatives. 4)Educate Others: Spread awareness about the importance of water conservation. Let’s honor Indigenous Peoples Day by safeguarding Florida’s natural beauty for generations! ???? #IndigenousPeoplesDay #WaterConservation #FloridaStateParks #Sustainability #CulturalHeritage

Environmental education is a powerful tool to inspire the next generation of conservationists and eradicate poverty. Akashinga's program provides educational materials for teachers to incorporate conservation into classrooms. By fostering a love for wildlife, we can create a movement of passionate environmental young minds who value and protect our natural world. #conservationeducation #educationforall #akashinga #wildlifeconservation #conservation #educationnmatters #empowermentthrougheducation

?????????????? ????????????????: ?????? ?????? ???????????? ?????????????? ???????????? ???? ????????????????: ?????????? ?????? ?????????? ???? ?????? ?????????? ?????????????????? Through this project, the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy Trust aims to enrich rural youth's understanding and appreciation of freshwater systems in the Greater Cape Floristic Region. This will be accomplished by creating five "state of the river" reports using data from local miniSASS and SASS5 activities conducted near areas where youth live and play. The project will support a national citizen science initiative for river health reporting and encourage local organisations to produce similar reports for their catchments. This initiative will raise awareness among youth, foster local conservation efforts, and help hold decision-makers accountable for implementing improvements in river health. #FynbosPride #TMFInTheField #ConservationFunding #CommunityConservation #EnvironmentalEducation #mentorship #CapeFloralKingdom #fynboseducation #FynbosForever #youthinconservation #freshwaterconservation Credit: Grootvadersbosch Conservancy

As climate change continues to impact communities worldwide, GRI is taking action through our Community Outreach Programs, working hand-in-hand with local communities to raise awareness about the importance of conserving natural resources. In the clip below, meet Naomi Daka, a former charcoal burner who shares her inspiring story of transformation. Thanks to conservation awareness efforts, Naomi was able to disengage from activities that contribute to climate change and wildlife crime, choosing to embrace more sustainable?practices. #WeAreAllRangers #CommunityOutreach #conservationeducation #community #conversationconversations #womensgroups #womenempowerment #femaleempowerment #education

If you believe that conservation agencies should be more accountable to Indigenous Peoples and other local communities impacted by their interventions, you may be interested in RFUK’s new report on protected area grievance and redress mechanisms (GRMs) in the Congo Basin. Frequent reports of forced displacements and abuses by Western-funded protected area rangers have put militarised ‘fortress conservation’ firmly in the spotlight in recent years, prompting various commitments from governments, funders and large conservation NGOs on human rights. However, this research, developed in collaboration with our local partners APEM, CAD, AJESH and CADD, finds there is a huge gap between such commitments and the reality on the ground with protected area GRMs so dysfunctional or absent that abuses in the region may be continuing on a large scale. This especially matters given the scale of the area under protected status globally and the international community’s commitment to effectively double this to 30 percent by 2030 (‘30x30’). To this end, the report also aims to provide conservation agencies, funders and organisations with practical recommendations for how to establish effective, accessible and culturally appropriate GRMs. Of course, the need for such mechanisms would be greatly reduced if we increase support to Indigenous Peoples and other local communities in their efforts to secure and protect their lands.

There will be no so-called ‘rights-based conservation’ without accountability for past (and ongoing) harms. And for this we need effective, comprehensive and accessible grievance mechanisms around national parks, among other things. This report I wrote for the Rainforest Foundation UK - with support from an amazing team and local partners - delves into the issue and provides practical pointers on how to make it happen in the Congo Basin.

At Baotree, we keep it simple: local communities matter most. They live on the frontlines of our richest biodiverse ecosystems, and know their homelands better than anyone else ever could. So, we make sure they’re part of every discussion and decision with our partners, and clients. With the right tools and a platform built for everyone’s inclusion, local people lead the charge to protect nature while improving their own livelihoods. #ConservationThatWorks Tori Taylor

I learned a ton from moderating this panel! Namely: -Conserving public land doesn't inherently guarantee access, and Maryland has already begun making the latter a priority through the Maryland Greenspace Equity Program. -California's Pathways to 30x30 Plan is a gold star model of community engagement (17 listening sessions over 12 months!) -Colorado's Outdoor Strategy and the Keep Colorado Wild Pass are two examples of creative funding/programming models for other states to consider. -New Mexico's Land of Enchantment Fund is the state's first ever dedicated fund for conservation, and was passed by a part-time legislature, making the investment even more impressive. In summary: if I were to place bets on where to make deep capacity, time and strategy investments to advance conservation and environmental justice goals in the wake of a very uncertain November, I'd go big on states. Kudos: Center for American Progress, Rep. Kristina Ortez, Sen. Sarah Elfreth, Jennifer Norris, Jonathan Asher, Taylor Anderson, Mariel Lutz, Drew McConville, and of course, to our keynote speaker and personal hero of mine: Chair Brenda Mallory
Last week, NCEL's Kate Burgess moderated a #conservation event with Center for American Progress to discuss how states across the nation are collaborating to address the #BiodiversityCrisis. From innovative conservation and outdoor equity funds to Tribal land return, states are leading in conservation efforts. Check out our joint report to learn more about state-level initatives in #Biodiversity ?? https://lnkd.in/essp2gtn
