Lately, I've seen so many posts saying "We are hiring psychology interns." But it's always one of two things: Either they’re hiring psychology students as interns, but it’s mostly to work as social media interns with maybe some basic psychology classes, training, and supervision. Or, they want students to pay for these so-called internships, which should really be advertised as trainings instead. I wonder, when will these psychology students actually find real internships? Hey fellas, since it's been a long time I posted anything, I'd share my experience of my summer internship, though my internship is not entirely counseling oriented but here are some essential life skills that I learnt there. Exposure to Diverse People: I worked with individuals from various backgrounds and cultures, enhancing my communication and collaboration skills. Engaging with different perspectives broadened my understanding and encouraged innovative thinking. Being Flexible and learning to maintain boundary at work. I adapted to new tasks and departments, learning to handle unexpected challenges with ease. I also learnt not everyone is your friend at work and its okay. This experience built my resilience and problem-solving abilities. Increasing My Skill Set: I applied theoretical knowledge in practical situations, developing both technical and soft skills. its more towards research project in govt sector schools, so it helped me increase my skills of research. Continuous learning made me more competitive in the job market. Working Multidimensionally: Taking on various roles helped me understand the interconnectedness of different functions within the organization. This holistic view enhanced my ability to contribute effectively. Contributing to Overall Growth: The internship provided a platform to explore my interests and strengths, significantly boosting my confidence. The challenges and achievements prepared me for future career opportunities. The Debate on Paid Internships: Are We Compromising Access to Experience? Lately, I've been exploring internship opportunities in the field of psychology, and one trend has left me with more questions than answers: the requirement to pay for an internship. As a student seeking practical experience, I understand that training involves time and resources. However, should interns be asked to bear this cost? In most industries, internships are seen as a mutually beneficial arrangement. Interns bring energy, fresh ideas, and a willingness to learn, while organizations provide hands-on experience and guidance. Requiring interns to pay seems to upset this balance, potentially creating barriers for those without financial means. This raises broader questions about access, equity, and inclusion in our field. If paid internships become the norm in psychology, could we be inadvertently excluding talented individuals who cannot afford to pay for work experience? This would be contrary to the principles of diversity and opportunity that we aim to uphold. On my journey to find internship, I was shocked to find out that despite having a lot of qualified professional in the field of psychology many of them lack a basic menial knowledge of job posting. As a part of my master's degree, I am required to do a 250 hrs of internship and as I was looking for further work, it became annoying on the lack of knowledge of people with a master's degree and even PhD scholars. so to make things easy, I have made a simplified version of definition to explain people about job posting. If your internship is offering someone to just sit and observe the process which gives them access to learn and understand things in practicality, it would be called an observership. it would be a understandable reason to charge, since the observer is not adding any value to your work nor helping in any productivity but rather gaining experience for themselves. if your internship offers lectures, daily, weekly or occasionally then it is not an internship, but rather a crash course or a course, calling it an internship is not only dishonesty but a scam and you are doing nothing but selling your product by lying. if your internship requires the intern to do small tasks or work such as scoring, interpreting, taking case history or other small stuff, it can be rightfully called as internship, while pay as such is highly subjective, but expecting someone to work for you for free in the name of exposure is just cheap, specially when it is an onsite job and you expect interns to travel at their own expense.

Be Confident????: if you’re a student of color, there may not be many people that look like you in the space you’re in. Know you BELONG, and you are there because you’re CAPABLE! Show them what you can do! 2?? Be engaged and professional??????: be on time, dressed appropriately, phones and heaphones away. Ask questions, volunteer for additional tasks, attend all the planned events. Be involved! 3?? Document your experience??: take notes, keep a journal, record video (with permission). You’ll need that information to draft your final presentation and resume. 4?? Network??: get to know your mentors, fellow interns, coordinators and other professionals. Ask for informational interviews. Connect, so that you’ll have a network of academic and professional support after your internship ends. 5?? Have fun??: it’s still summer!
