Wow - some eye opening stats in today’s Animal Management Annual Report. While the good news is a 19% increase in the number of dogs adopted into their forever homes, it’s not proportionate to the growing number of dog-related issues the team are seeing. Elly Waitoa (Bridges) and her incredible team share what they’re seeing, the lengths they’re going to in response and their key messages for dog owners. “What we have seen over the past year is that fewer Aucklanders are getting their dogs desexed or registered, they’re not socialising them properly and not keeping them contained to their properties. As a result, we’re seeing higher numbers of aggressive dogs out roami--ng the streets and putting the public, other animals and themselves at risk.” Check it out here:

Who’s Really to Blame? I know this article is from a couple of years ago, but it still hits a nerve. As a responsible large dog owner, I find it frustrating that so many people keep large dog breeds without understanding how to properly manage them. Rather than resorting to extreme measures like shooting all large dogs—an idea that is frankly absurd—why not push for a law requiring large dog owners to complete basic training with their pets? Owners and dogs could then earn a safety certification to prove they’re equipped to handle public spaces responsibly. I was bitten by a large dog at 12 and still have the scars, so I understand the risks firsthand. Large dog breeds can be powerful animals, and with that comes responsibility. Owners must be held accountable for ensuring their pets are safe to be around. [1 in 10 Seoul households own dogs: report] Maltese most common breed with Gangnam having most of dogs as pets One in every 10 households in Seoul has a dog registered as a pet, with the Maltese the most common breed, a report showed Thursday. Some 612,000 dogs are registered in Seoul, 17.5 percent of the total dogs registered across the country. Of the total, some 20 percent of dog owners said they had a Maltese, the report released by the Seoul Digital Foundation, affiliated with the Seoul metropolitan government. The list of common breeds also included poodles, mixed-breed dogs, Pomeranians and Shih Tzus. The most common dog name was Coco at 1.7 percent, followed by Bori at 1.3 percent, and Choco at 1.2 percent.
