Picture this: a man and woman walk into the ER at the same time. Both say they’re in pain. The man receives the appropriate pain medication. The woman is met with doubt but is nonetheless administered pain medication about half an hour later than the man. This isn’t a hypothetical situation. It’s a reality that a study found after analyzing 22,000 patient discharge notes that included pain complaints. It also concluded that: ?? Women were less likely than men to be prescribed necessary pain-relief treatments ?? Nurses were 10% less likely to record women’s pain scores upon admission to the emergency department ?? Nurses rated female patients’ pain as less intense than male patients And before you assume that the nurses and medical personnel were mostly male, think again. Both male and female physicians treated men's and women’s pain in the same manner. This is yet another example of how women need providers they can trust to listen, hear, and believe what they’re saying about their own bodies. Source: a recent study published in PNAS

This month at Turn Medical we are bringing awareness to the ongoing #opioidcrisis in America that has most likely affected all of us in some capacity. A number of us here at Turn Medical are bedside clinicians who have cared for many patients in the ICU with respiratory complications due to opioid overdoses. This crisis has impacted us significantly and is one of the reasons why we are so dedicated to our products and educational platform. The opioid crisis began taking root in the 1990s when the “Pain, The Fifth Vital Sign” campaign emerged, and providers began prescribing an abundance of opioids for pain management. In 2011, the CDC announced deaths from prescription opioids as an epidemic. The U.S. healthcare and public health systems began to take measures to stop the overprescribing of opioid pain medications, but around the same time, deaths began to rise and have continued to increase from heroin, fentanyl, and similar synthetic opioids. We at #TurnMedical are passionate about supporting families and #healthcareproviders. If you have a patient or loved one who you think would benefit from our products, please reach out to us at 855-ASK-TURN. We are here to turn patients toward positive outcomes. #nurses #rn #healthcaretips #healthcareworkers #medical #pronovao2 #prone #pronepositioning https://lnkd.in/gBr8a_3i

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a comprehensive, medically supervised program aimed at preventing secondary cardiovascular events and enhancing the overall health and longevity of patients. Those who qualify for the program have experienced a cardiac event or have a chronic cardiac disease. At its core, CR includes lifestyle education, patient counseling, and exercise. The "Traditional Center-based CR Model" is a phrase in which many envision a hospital-based outpatient program that expects patients to attend an onsite class three times a week for twelve weeks, leading to 36 billable visits (the insurance maximum). Typically, CR is delivered by a multidisciplinary team, made up of a combination of clinical exercise physiologists, registered nurses, pharmacists, registered dietitians, psychosocial counselors, and other clinical staff. Ultimately, CR is more than an exercise program, it is a LIFESTYLE program that incorporates all of the "Core Components of CR" into patient care. Visit chanlhealth.com to learn how Chanl Health folds into CR! #cardiacrehab #secondaryprevention #cardiovasculardisease

URGENT: Submit your suggestion for 'GUIDELINES FOR WITHDRAWAL OF LIFE SUPPORT IN TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS'?Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Many patients in the ICU are terminally ill, and not expected to benefit from life sustaining treatments (LST) that include (but are not limited to) mechanical ventilation, vasopressors, dialysis, surgical procedures, transfusions, parenteral nutrition or Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). In such circumstances, LST are non-beneficial and increase avoidable burdens and suffering to patients and therefore, are considered excessive and inappropriate. Additionally, they increase emotional stress and economic hardship to the family and moral distress to professional caregivers.1 Withdrawal of LST in such patients is regarded as a standard of ICU care worldwide and upheld by several jurisdictions. 2,3 Such decisions have medical, ethical and legal considerations. Understanding and Managing Diabetes: A Nurse's Perspective Diabetes Mellitus, often referred to as a silent epidemic, affects millions worldwide. Yet, many remain unaware of its progression and impact until complications arise. As nurses, we play a critical role in empowering patients to take control of their health. Did you know? - Prediabetes, a reversible stage, often goes unnoticed due to lack of symptoms. - Simple lifestyle changes like balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and weight management can delay or prevent the onset of Type 2 Diabetes. From my experience, effective nursing care includes: - Patient Education: Simplifying complex medical terms to help patients understand their condition and its implications. -Personalized Care Plans: Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to tailor interventions based on individual needs. - Emotional Support: Helping patients overcome the psychological challenges of living with a chronic condition. Nurse, am I going to die? Will I Survive it? My Urine is Red in color, why? I replied “this is Normal” These were the exact words of a patient who had iron overload and was placed on Deferoxamine.. Iron overload is a common complication in patients requiring repeated blood transfusions, such as those with sickle cell disease or thalassemia. To prevent damage to vital organs, these patients are often treated with deferoxamine, an iron-chelating agent. Deferoxamine binds excess iron, allowing the body to excrete it through urine. A normal and expected effect of this process is reddish-orange urine, which simply indicates the medication is working. Educating patients about this can ease concerns and improve adherence.

?? Importance of Full Disclosure to Your Medical Provider ?? As a healthcare professional, I have witnessed how incomplete medical disclosure can affect patient care. Some patients fail to share crucial information about their medical conditions or do not follow their prescribed management plans, especially for chronic illnesses like diabetes and high blood pressure. This information is equally important for your obstetrician & gynaecologist during pregnancy as it is for your physician, surgeon, and other healthcare professionals. This tendency can significantly impact the effectiveness of treatments and overall health outcomes. Open communication with your medical provider is crucial. If you've been diagnosed with a condition but are struggling to accept it or have been non-compliant with medication or management plans, it's vital to share this with your doctor. My advice to everyone is simple yet powerful: Be transparent with your healthcare provider. Inform them about any concerns or challenges you may face accepting your diagnosis or adhering to recommended treatments. This transparency allows healthcare providers to tailor their approach, ensuring you receive the best possible care for your health. Quality healthcare outcomes can be achieved through open and honest communication. What do you think? ?? #HealthcareAwareness #PatientCare #MedicalDisclosure #HealthManagement #OpenCommunication

?? Understanding the Different Types of Stroke ?? As healthcare professionals, it's crucial to stay informed about the various types of strokes and their causes. Here's a quick overview: ??Ischemic Stroke: Caused by a blocked artery, often due to a thrombotic event where plaque or a clot forms on the arterial wall. Uncontrolled hypertension can be a significant factor. ??Hemorrhagic Stroke: Occurs when a ruptured artery leads to pressure buildup, causing the vessel to burst through a weakened arterial wall. ??Embolic Stroke: Happens when a plaque or clot breaks away and lodges in a brain blood vessel. Understanding these types can help in early detection and effective management. Let's continue to educate ourselves and others to improve patient outcomes. ?? #Healthcare #StrokeAwareness #PatientCare #Nursing #MedicalEducation
