I recall laughing at this joke as a kid. Today, it holds a different lesson. You see, I was about to tell my team to perform at their best on stage because they never know who might be recording the performance. You don’t want a recording of a bad performance from us being circulated. Then it dawned on me - are we capable of giving a good performance? One worthy to be recorded? Then comes the next question - if we’re capable of giving that level of performance for recording, why couldn’t we bring this same level every time? Why do need to see if there’s police before we decide to follow the rules? If you are capable of giving your best, then give it every time!

Neutrality, which means treating all individuals with fairness, is essential for maintaining public trust and preventing accusations of bias or excessive force. In situations like the 2011 London riots, a balanced approach of firmness and restraint was necessary to manage the volatile situation effectively. Firmness in law enforcement involves issuing clear commands and ensuring compliance to preserve public peace. In hostile crowds, immediate and decisive action is often required, demonstrating a controlled and resolute presence. In the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, adequate force and readiness were crucial, with cities that refused federal help being the most devastated. Approaching vocal individuals in a crowd can be effective in managing group behavior, and clear, respectful communication can help maintain peace. In dealing with excited or hostile crowds, it is essential to recognize the potential for rapid escalation into mob action.
