Fellow Process Engineers Around the World, What would a process plant be without us, the chemical engineers? I wouldn’t want to imagine it. Our expertise is the backbone of safe and efficient operations. If there’s anyone accustomed to handling high pressures and temperatures, it’s the process engineer -who confidently navigates and overcomes these challenging conditions. We are the ones who turn theoretical knowledge into practical solutions, ensuring that every reaction occurs at just the right temperature, under precisely the right conditions. Several factors dictate the temperature range for operating a commercial reactor, with two critical ones being the reaction rate’s dependence on temperature and the position of chemical equilibrium. But it doesn’t stop there -secondary considerations such as the dew point of a gaseous mixture, the bubble point of a liquid mixture, and the temperature dependence of corrosion reactions also play pivotal roles in defining the optimal operating temperature. For non-isothermal reactors, the reactor designer must tackle key questions: How can the temperature of the reacting system be related to the degree of conversion achieved? And how does this temperature influence the system’s subsequent performance? In answering these questions, we rely on our fundamental tools -the Material Balance and the Energy Balance. Our work is more than just technical -it's an art that requires precision, intuition, and a deep understanding of the science behind every process. A Thursday Thought: "What exactly do you do, Dick?" If I had a penny for every time I've been asked that since the start of my career, I'd be a wealthy man. Choosing Chemical Engineering at Queen's University Belfast initially raised many eyebrows among my friends and family. It was seen as an unconventional path with uncertain prospects—truthfully, I wasn't sure myself, given the scarce job opportunities in the field near home. My career began as a graduate engineer at Irish Cement Limited, where my first day at the Platin works in Drogheda left me in awe of its massive scale. "Maybe my mother was right; perhaps I should have been a pharmacist," I mused, feeling both daunted and determined. Despite those early challenges, I thrived in the building products manufacturing industry, working with several companies and enjoying a fulfilling professional journey. In 2018, discontent with settling and uninterested in climbing corporate ladders, I seized an opportunity in Consulting. This decision only added to the puzzled looks of my family and friends. "I thought you were a cement engineer? What kind of consultant are you, exactly?" Six years and no regrets later, I still find it challenging to succinctly describe what we at @clerkinconsulting do. Our projects span various disciplines, much like my days playing with Monaghan, when I was lined out on every line of the pitch at some stage over my career. So when my father recently asked me—perhaps for the hundredth time—what I do, I knew it was time for a clearer explanation: "Essentially we enhance performance. Our work with clients focuses on elevating their business performance in areas such as productivity, quality, cost reduction, sustainability, and health and safety. Our approach combines working closely with their teams to harness collective capabilities and knowledge, optimising processes and systems to eliminate inefficiencies, and supporting the installation of new, high-performance equipment. Because of my background, and understanding of the unique cultures and people, we focus on companies within the built environment, from manufacturing right through to site-based construction. " "Okay... I think I understand what you do now' My mother still wishes I would have been a Pharmacist though!! Ha..

#Federal University of Technology Owerri #Chemical Engineering #Undergraduate plant design defense our design topic was to design a plant that would produce 100,000 metric tonnes of Acetic Anhydride from coal using the Monsanto process. As the group leader, it was really tasking, but with wisdom, synergy with my team mate, intense research, asking our senior colleagues and supervisors for directions we were able to succeed. This research really involved alot from the use of acetic Anhydride to the process description of the Monsanto process, down to the material and energy balance, the process flows, piping and instrumentation diagrams, qualitative flow diagrams, equipment sizing, specifications and material selection, safety, economic analysis, plant layout and site selection and finally starting and shutting down the plant. indeed it was a big one. I am really thankful for this opportunity, not only have I gained in-depth knowledge in my field of study but I have learnt leadership skills in the process. Indeed you really do not know the potentials in you until you set your mind to accomplish something. Thank you chemical Engineering Futo. Refineries are highly complex processing plants with significant interconnections, a range of products that can be produced and feedstocks available. Identifying processing options that have economic improvement potential requires chemical engineering talent but defining executable projects requires a range of Engineering and Design disciplines. An excellent and current example that I am excited to talk about is a project that Primoris Engineering recently studied for a North American Refinery exploring increasing gasoline production. The result was a project with a payback of less than two years. Two key features of the work was the optimization of the flow scheme and plant layout to reduce costs.?

As a reliability engineer in the petrochemical industry, I’m often asked how my Systems Engineering PhD research aligns with my professional work. Here’s how they beautifully intertwine: ?? Research Focus: My PhD delves into developing a systematic framework for decision-making within the Circular Economy (CE), specifically focusing on identifying and leveraging cognitive biases. This involves the integration of sustainability principles, systems engineering, and innovative methodologies to enhance decision-making processes. ?? Professional Role: In my role, I am responsible for ensuring the reliability and safety of complex systems within petrochemical plants. This requires a deep understanding of system dynamics, risk assessment, and the implementation of robust strategies to prevent failures and optimise performance. ?? The Connection: Systems Engineering & Reliability: Both my research and my job rely heavily on systems engineering principles. Understanding how components interact and ensuring their reliability is crucial in both areas, especially social systems. Sustainability & Efficiency: My PhD research promotes sustainable decision-making, which is increasingly relevant in the petrochemical industry as we strive for greener and more efficient operations. Implementing CE principles can significantly improve resource management and waste reduction. Innovation & Continuous Improvement: The innovative approaches and frameworks developed in my research can be applied to improve reliability practices and sustainability initiatives within the petrochemical sector. My PhD research enriches my professional practice by providing advanced methodologies and a sustainability focus, while my role as a reliability engineer offers practical insights and real-world challenges that inform my academic pursuits.
