?? Nurses! Let's celebrate diversity & ditch unconscious bias this April #CelebrateDiversityMonth?? We ALL have biases, but they shouldn't affect how we care for patients! ? This week's Periop Life blog sheds light on the critical role nurses play in fostering equitable healthcare environments and gives tips to help you navigate bias. 1?? Complete a Self-Assessment: Continuous self-monitoring of actions and perspectives is key to evaluating potential biases. Utilizing tools like the DEI Self-Assessment (follow the blog link below) helps enhance awareness and sensitivity to biases that may inadvertently affect patient care. 2?? Put Your Patient’s Needs in Perspective: Viewing each patient as a unique individual, deserving of respect and optimal care, is paramount. Nurses are encouraged to adopt a patient-centered approach, reflecting on whether the care they provide aligns with what they would desire for themselves or their loved ones. 3?? Keep Learning: “Diversity speaks many languages and has many faces,” says Debra Callender, DNP, RN, CNOR, CSSM, in the blog. “As we all learn more about what it means to live in a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture, we can continue to think differently about ways to curb our bias and fuel healthy patient-to-nurse relationships.” She encourages perioperative nurses to learn about implicit bias as part of DEI education in healthcare. When have you had to check your unconscious bias? Tell us in the comments. Head to the blog to learn more and share with your nurse fam! https://bit.ly/4cA5wD7 #PeriopLife #HealthcareEquity #Inclusion #ornurse #nurslife #nursing #nurses #nurse

First year, no fear! ?? The first year of perioperative practice can be challenging, and the right mindset is essential. Your preceptor can offer words of wisdom; along with that, perioperative nurses who have weathered a few storms?? during their first years of practice can provide a lifeline sprinkled with lessons that they found helpful as novice perioperative nurses. These include: ? Give yourself grace, ??? because the first year is demanding. ? Focus on the positive?? ? Find your ???????? people - those who are encouraging Self-care is an essential, but often neglected, element of the transition to perioperative practice. At the heart of self-care is self-compassion, which enables you to manage conflicting feelings and process the disharmony instead of spiraling ?? into feelings of shame and inadequacy. As a new perioperative nurse, getting caught up in the negative talk in your head can be easy. Giving yourself grace or compassion??allows you to move past the negativity associated with the event and focus on improving and learning. Thanks to nurse Lindsey Wilson-Collins, BSN, RN, and to author @jacquischmittbak, Ed.D. R.N. Ready to enhance your pediatric nursing skills and make a positive impact on our littlest patients? Here are some golden tips to help you connect with and care for children more effectively: 1. Communicate on their level: Use simple, age-appropriate language. Get down to their eye level to build trust and make them feel more comfortable. 2. Be patient and playful: Incorporate games and playful activities to distract and engage them during procedures or assessments. 3. Incorporate comfort items: Allow them to hold a favorite toy or blanket. These familiar items can provide immense comfort and reduce anxiety. 4. Explain things clearly and honestly: Be honest about what's happening, but frame it in a way that is less scary. 5. Involve their parents: Keep parents informed and involved. Their calm and supportive presence can greatly ease a child's stress and fears. 6. Be attentive to non-verbal cues: Kids might not always express discomfort or fear verbally. Pay attention to their body language, facial expressions and behavior. 7. Create a child-friendly environment: Decorate with bright colors, fun posters and have kid-friendly books or activities available. 8. Stay educated and empathetic: Keep up-to-date with your education; and always approach young patients with empathy and compassion. Remember, your dedication and kindness can transform a child's healthcare experience. Let's continue making their world a little brighter!
