Thank you for highlighting the crucial role Black churches play in fostering philanthropy and empowering African American communities. This connection showcases their resilience and commitment. While the legacy of giving in Black churches is strong, there’s often a lack of understanding of modern fundraising techniques essential for sustained success. Many divinity schools don’t cover fundraising, leaving churches to rely on traditional methods like “passing the plate” or community fundraisers, which are often insufficient today. Modern fundraising requires strategies like timely donor recognition, annual reports, and donor segmentation, which are crucial for targeted engagement. Creating a compelling Case for Support and executing strategic solicitations are often overlooked but foundational to success. These skills are learnable. With the right guidance, Black churches can effectively implement these strategies, ensuring they thrive and serve their communities. Your article is a crucial step in starting this conversation, and I hope it encourages Black church leaders to seek the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in modern fundraising. Black churches must remain sustainable and grow for the well-being of our communities.

Excellent, transparent narrative here. So much truth-which is unfortunate Read until the end where the author, Chanda C. offers their five tips on discerning what leadsrs are walking into. "A New Form of White Flight Leadership transitions are challenging in any organization, regardless of racial dynamics. But when leaders of color are tasked with fixing these problems, they are too often left with little to no cash (nor significant funder relationships) to help them do it. Research from the Building Movement Project’s Race to Lead initiative found that 63 percent of POC leaders cite a lack of access to individual donors as a fundraising challenge, compared to 49 percent of white leaders who say this is a challenge. Similarly, 51 percent of POC leaders cite lack of access to foundations as a challenge compared to 41 percent of white leaders. "In practice, this makes nonprofit executives of color more like “the help” than the leaders they could be."

"By compiling, contextualizing and publishing biographical and other historical information about the origins of philanthropic wealth, the stories of harm experienced by Black people become unavoidable and, more importantly, actionable – especially for funders with a commitment to racial equity or racial justice. Research that connects and centers stories of local Black communities can generate energy, opportunities and concrete actions for foundations to engage in reparations and healing efforts. This report is both an invitation and a roadmap for local foundations – studied and otherwise – to do exactly that. Although our immediate focus is the DMV, the methodology and recommendations can serve as a model for funders and activists in other cities and regions. In addition, we believe this framework and process has potential applications not just for philanthropy, but for those grappling with these questions in the public and private sectors as well."
