Powerful comments from Representative Lucy McBath as the #StopCampusHazingAct is marked-up in the House Committee on Education & the Workforce: "While the circumstances may be just somewhat different, I know the pain of losing a child. I know the hole it leaves in your soul and the questions it leaves you to continue to dwell on for the rest of your lives… The only thing that we can do now is try to harness our pain and do something positive with it. To try to make a lasting change that will prevent other families from suffering a similar tragedy and creating a long-lasting legacy that truly speaks to the person that you loved so deeply. It’s the same reason that I decided to run for Congress, and the same reason that drove Jeanne Clery’s parents to take their power back as parents and get the Clery?Act signed into law after the tragic killing of their daughter on campus in 1986. Jeanne Clery’s parents made the same argument that I have heard time and time again from families who have lost loved ones to collegiate hazing. 'If only we had known.' 'If only we had been made aware sooner.'? 'If only we had been given a clearer picture of the real situation on the ground, maybe I could have done something different, and maybe my son or my daughter or my brother or my sister would still be here with me.' That’s what this bill simply is about. It’s about empowering students and families, so that they can make an informed decision for themselves about what school they or their loved one attends or the club they may join and hopefully save their lives… And I encourage all of my colleagues to support this truly bipartisan piece of legislation that saves our children’s lives. They are the least of these. They deserve to be kept safe in their homes, in their communities, and simply when they go off to college. I look forward to getting this bill signed into law by the President in this Congress and providing a sense of relief and closure for all of you that have been left behind." PLEASE help us get #SCHA on to the next important step, a vote on the House floor. This easy, fast form to sends a letter to your representatives. It truly makes a difference for lawmakers to see these emails in their inboxes! https://lnkd.in/dYyNukY #EndHazing #CampusSafety #CleryAct

Some potentially exciting news for Florida high school athletes is on the horizon. ?? TAMPA, Fla. - the Florida High School Athletic Association (#FHSAA) introduced a groundbreaking proposal that could change the game for student-athletes across the state. This new draft which will be voted on on Tuesday, 6/4, would allow high schoolers in the state to take advantage of their #NIL through endorsements, social media, ads, and more. ?? According to the proposal, student-athletes will have the opportunity to earn money, but there are important guidelines: ? No use of school names or uniforms in NIL deals. ?????? Parents must handle all NIL negotiations. ?? Certain products like alcohol, vaping, gambling, and weapons are off-limits for NIL deals. ??However, this proposal isn’t without controversy. Some worry that NIL money could impact the integrity of high school sports, causing players to transfer schools for better deals. To address this, the FHSAA draft includes strict transfer rules and penalties for breaking NIL guidelines. Many believe it's only a matter of time before NIL is allowed for high schoolers in Florida given the state's propensity of producing high level college (and professional) athletes. Check out the link ?? below for more details about which athletes in Florida in the class of 2025 and 2026 stand to benefit based on Tuesday's vote. https://lnkd.in/gXchp-EA

I always look forward to the new #PDKPoll results, particularly for an update on how the public is feeling about their child/ren entering the teaching profession. In looking at this year's topline data, I find it very interesting (and amusing) to see how much more opinionated on this question the public has become since 1969, when 10% of respondents didn't have an opinion either way. This grew to 22% of respondents in 1983 before a sharp decline to get to single digits in 1993 - today, 1% of respondents replied "no opinion" I have to imagine that the impacts of the release of A Nation at Risk in April of 1983 and the subsequent shift in how we talk about K-12 education and its "failures" (including who to blame for them) is being shown here. In working with state leaders to address teacher recruitment and retention issues over the past several years, the need for a marketing campaign around the positives of being a teacher has been raised every time. This data is a stark reminder that the way we as a field talk about what it means to be an educator matters - not that we shouldn't advocate for higher pay and better working conditions and publicly share student achievement data, but that we probably need to be more considerate of how we do so and aware of the unintended consequences of our attempts to hold people accountable within the unwieldy system(s) of K-12 education in our country.
PDK International continues a long tradition of uncovering the public's attitudes about public schools in America. We're pleased to announce the release of our 56th annual poll: https://pdkpoll.org/

Hands down the most effective conference for educators of personal finance. Not only has the national team of Laura L. Levine Dan Hebert Joel Chrisler and many more, mastered hosting a comprehensive conference with a teacher-centered focus (it's in their mission!), they are doing incredible work ALL year long to promote why this content is critical to our nation's youth. I have leaned on all three of these individuals at one time or another since discovering their work, and often stated that #JumpStartNEC changed my classroom, not only for me, but for my students. (Mystic Dan) #DanTheMan, Laura, Joel, the entire JumpStart Team...I appreciate you for wanting my classroom to be better in providing high-quality, highly-engaging personal finance resources for ALL of my students. I wish State Departments of Education understood how this work has been comprehensive for many years, not just convenient timing in recent headlines. You understand the data and the importance of doing this correctly. Apply today!!
So Mystic Dan won the Kentucky Derby this weekend! (see what I did there?) Guess who's going to win in Louisville this November? Teachers! Would you consider sponsoring a scholarship for them to attend? https://lnkd.in/e8jePq_Q
