Still riding the high from last week's Event Tech Live! I'd like to share some insights for those in event production asking about the value of attending such an event. As someone deeply embedded in the industry, I firmly believe in supporting key industry events, whether IMEX, International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE), Meeting Professionals International, ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership, PCMA, or anything I might have missed. Advocating for your own event means recognizing the value in others—especially those who support our industries. While many events offer networking opportunities with event technology providers, none compare to Event Tech Live if you want to dive deep. It’s the place to see various technologies under one roof, assess them firsthand, and gain invaluable insights. You'll still get value from engaging with event tech at those events and do it as they exhibit to see you. However, at ETL, you can engage with different industries to see how they are using other solutions and hear from Event Tech leaders about how they are trying to make an impact to foster growth for event technology and development for your events. I highly recommend attending Event Tech Live in the UK later this year, but if you are in the US, you need to make it a must to catch the US edition in '25. MWC Las Vegas needs a reboot. Seemingly, half the exhibitors from 2019 have disappeared. More concerning, there’s only one major U.S. operator on the floor and no Canadian or CALA operators. None of the traditional RAN hardware and software suppliers are exhibiting; a major Open RAN supplier is MIA. Oh, and no major tower, neutral host or fiber providers have floor presence. And the annual speculation of whether 5G, Open RAN, BEAD, DISH, CBRS Private Networks, and AI Networks are either ready for prime time or poised to put a dent in the universe seems like Groundhog Day. These factors, plus hefty registration and travel costs, have influenced many folks I talk to not to attend this year; including myself. Having served on advisory boards for several industry events, I understand the plight of conferences is impacted by internal and external factors. Most resist change because change is difficult. The last time this event changed in a major way was 2017 when GSMA relaunched what was CTIA Super Mobility Week. Notably, it was moved from Las Vegas to San Francisco and intentionally sought to engage ecosystem participants beyond the U.S. What’s beyond the event organizers’ control is that 5G, Open RAN and CBRS Private Networks have largely been underwhelming, to-date (or at least fallen far short of expectations). Perhaps 5G SA will reinvigorate the event. Or perhaps as AI matures, it will imbue the event with momentum in the way the introduction of smartphones did. Then again, maybe the current version of MWC Las Vegas is the “new normal.” Nevertheless, I’ve got some thoughts on rebooting this event which I’ll share separately. (Wouldn’t that be an incredible opportunity and responsibility to chart its course for the rest of the decade!) I’ve enjoyed a long history with MWC Las Vegas and its predecessor and hope to have more experiences at in the future.
