In a study done by Virginia Commonwealth University to determine the different career paths public doctoral university presidents take, they found 46% of these institutions’ presidents began their careers in something other than a tenure-track position, such as nonacademic roles within a corporation, military, or government, before moving into the higher education space. A couple of thoughts. First, if you had to read only one book, Huck Finn is the one! Next, this is some new legislation that I think is going in the right direction with fully informing students before they commit to a college program with financial burdens. This has to stop! And… We need educated people in our society! We need them in professional roles, but we also need them just in terms of our citizenship, in my opinion. We need people voting who have critical thinking skills. That usually involves some education. "Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education." Franklin D.Roosevelt Part of the issue is the debt that students are taking on, but part of it is that we are not, as a country, supporting higher education more than we are financially. I do not want to be tagged as a negative Nellie when it comes to education, BUT universities see these huge dollar signs when a service member or veteran shows up! Their jobs are to sell credit hours and enrollment, bottom line. Do your due diligence, sometimes the quickest and easiest degree is not the best. Business likes Bachelor of Science, does that mean a non entry with a Bachelor of Arts, no way BUT if they are down to two candidates with similar experience they will lean to science for if anything the math. Try to stay away from very specialized degrees. For instance I originally looked at an Masters in Healthcare Administration, glad I chose another path as healthcare now looks at MBA's more closely than MHA's. Reason business applications versus the narrower healthcare emphasis. Just a simple example. Look at position postings and what is require versus preferred for a position. If they want 3-5 years experience with a Bachelors Degree, and you list 20 years experience with a Masters you may over qualify yourself. There are a ton of Masters degrees out there, does the career require it? Keep in mind as a service member you are a big $ sign to universities, you have money to spend and they love selling you. Do not be under or oversold, know what your basic need is prior to sitting down with a school. What is their placement rate, what is their graduation rate, what is their ranking by employers. Look this stuff up, do not accept sales brochures from universities, of course those numbers are going to look good. Be a smart buyer, do the same with your kids. Scholarships can be the deal breaker. A degree with a load of debt or a degree in specialized area that only few careers except will not help.

It's almost over... Tomorrow, nearly 80 military and civilian students will graduate from the Defense Information School's Public Affairs Communication Strategy Qualification Course (PACS-Q). I have the honor of once again emceeing the event. Part of the job requires me to type each student's name and affiliation into the script. I enjoy the exercise because it allows me to reflect on each of the students who have been with us for the past nine weeks. As I work on the list, I often ask whether I have done all that I can for each student in my class and in my small group. Did I get to know them individually? Did I support them well enough in their classwork and group projects? Did I pour into their cup? Of course, the answer varies. It always will. But this exercise reminds me how important it is to be intentional and authentic with each student, and to try to fill their cup in each encounter. “Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up.” Dean Karnazes. A quote that has stuck with me from a young age and was a daily affirmation through my military training and parts of my military career. Leaving school with no formal qualifications I can wholeheartedly say I possess no natural academic prowess, far from ! I also can’t say I left the military with much more. But what I can say is I have a shed tone of heart ,as did the piers I served with which still inspires me today. For me now studying at university hasn’t come easy, if i could turn back time: offer me a 0900-1500 day to just listen and learn and id snap your hand off ?? The picture was taken last night knocking onto 9pm finding references for my Economics module at University College of Estate Management. I guess what I’m trying to articulate and perhaps inspire is mainly aimed at fellow service personnel who may also have a similar background to me but feel their potential is more than where they’re at. Navigating leaving the forces is not an easy choice for most, joining the forces and leaving is commendable in my opinion. The vision of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for professional military education is clear: the Marine Corps War College (MCWAR) needs to help prepare Joint leaders, senior staff officers, and strategists to “execute and adapt strategy through campaigns and operations” and “conduct joint warfighting at the operational to strategic levels.”1 To achieve this, MCWAR students must first grapple with the fundamentals of national security strategy and grand strategy formulation before delving into the complexities of military strategy.This is the purpose of The Marine Corps War College Strategy Primer. It not only provides students an overview of the elements of strategic logic but also introduces a cognitive model for developing and assessing strategy by leveraging innovative design methodologies and other critical and creative thinking approaches. The MCWAR strategy primer and succeeding curriculum is only the first step in preparing the next cadre of strategists—one that must be reinforced by a lifetime of study.
