Look around, and we’re starting to see the first signs of spring appear – new buds, lighter evenings, vibrant greens replacing the browns and greys of winter and, most importantly, the feeling of hope and new possibilities that always comes with warmer weather. It’s this feeling of hope and possibility we’re focusing on this issue, from the richness and inspiration on our doorsteps – our beautiful, diverse landscape – and how this is reflected in our city’s culture and community. Our outward-facing, trading, innovative forefathers made Peterborough and the surrounding area a magnet for settlers over the centuries, and this is a status we enjoy to this day as an ever-evolving, growing city rich in grassroots culture, arts, business, tech and learning. This issue, we’re featuring a range of people and projects that showcase some of the very best aspects of our communities and landscape. There’s a special feature on photographer and paramedic Chris Porsz – a regional treasure who has captured (and cared for) Peterborians for decades. His ‘Reunions’ collection of photographs became a global, viral hit – and we revisit some of his most iconic pictures, and the stories behind them. We also caught up with Matthew Bradbury, the CEO of Nene Park, to find out what Peterborough’s favourite green space has in store for us in the year ahead; we chat with the city’s poets; and we delve into a brand new centre for green technology being built right here, to enhance and future-proof learning and skills. For many, our region and city has been a haven – and we’ve got that covered, too, from refugees to artists. Read about the extraordinary Krystyna Lewandowska – Polish Jewish resistance fighter who, after World War II, found peace and freedom here, and John Clare, the 18th century peasant poet who overcame crippling class barriers to create work that endures to this day. We all know how special Peterborough and its people are – and we like to think of this issue in particular as celebrating that. Dig in, discover more about your city and its inhabitants, and what it has to offer. Click here to read the March 2024 edition: https://lnkd.in/eKN-xNR8

For those interested, the full transcript of Michael Gove's address at RIBA on 19th December can be found by following the link below. His updates on the Cambridge 2040 plan is toward the end of the speech. The main points have been covered in the media, including the proposed establishment of a new development corporation and an update on new sources of water supply for Cambridge to come "in the new year". However, the key point for me is the stated ambition for future development to "set the standard for how we protect and preserve what makes a city special and also how we design and equip it for the century ahead". A grand ambition and one that we must work towards being lived up to. https://lnkd.in/eskv4xfG

What is an Official Plan? It is a long-range planning document that sets out goals, objectives, and policies to guide growth and development in a municipality, and directs how land in a municipality should be used. Land use planning policies are complex and can include many aspects, from where and what types of housing are permitted, to the kinds of retail or industry that are needed, to what type of services are required to support the residents of a municipality. My Planning Team at the Town of Essex, Ontario, in collaboration with our planning consultant WSP in Canada, is hosting three (3) Open Houses to present and review the Town's Draft New Official Plan. Our Official Plan is intended to fulfill certain planning objectives over the next 25 years and is guided by the following principles: o Building on our Agricultural Strengths o Leveraging our Location for Employment o Elevating our Unique Communities o Achieving a Sustainable and Resilient Town If you are a resident, landowner, business, or tenant in the Town of Essex (Essex Centre, Harrow, McGregor, Colchester, Gesto, and everything in between!), please consider dropping in to one of the Open Houses or reviewing the information on our Project Webpage. Your Community. Your Vision.

Join the NYU Furman Center on October 9th for a panel discussion on the growing calls for state and local governments to play a more direct role in investing, financing, building, and owning new housing. As the housing crisis deepens and consensus builds around the need to increase supply, policymakers are evaluating the opportunities and risks of government-led housing development. Across the nation, mixed-income models are emerging that range from direct government involvement in development and ownership to public financing at varying risk levels. Each approach requires careful consideration of financial, regulatory, and operational risks, as well as the need to balance the existing affordable housing portfolio with long-term public benefit and sustainability. Experts in urban policy, housing finance, and public administration will explore the potential benefits and challenges of New York City and New York State taking a more active role in multifamily housing development, with a focus on mixed-income financing models that blend public and private investments. Workshop on land assembly? Sounds great! Land isn't necessarily an issue. However, land that is developable (or can be made economically viable to develop) is often raised as a huge challenge in rural areas. Rather than focus on challenges as a negative, though, it'll be really interesting to discuss the opportunities of land assembly in supporting rural housing delivery.
Join an inspiring workshop on "Land for Rural Housing" by the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence (CaCHE)! ?? ?? When: Thursday, Feb 22, 2024 ?? Time: 12:00 - 15:00 ?? Where: MacDonald Aviemore Resort Get ready for an engaging discussion on land assembly and its role in increasing the supply of affordable rural housing. Lunch will be provided upon arrival. Places are limited! Contact Dr. Gareth D. James at [email protected] to secure your spot. Check out what CaCHE do via https://lnkd.in/equbpJDR. Thursday is shaping up to be an inspiring introduction to our main conference. Don't miss this valuable opportunity to shape the future of rural housing! #RHSConference2024 #LandForRuralHousing #CaCHE
