This week my Mom began a home hospice journey. Unexpected change and choices that can’t be retaken were a big theme for me this week. To a similar extent, these forces are inherent for healthcare leaders tasked with transformation and prioritizing investments in AI and other breakthrough innovations. Two passages helped me and I hope they resonate with others. The first is from Gary Burnison: “Life is situational, tomorrow is not guaranteed. And so, we anticipate, as best we can, what lies ahead. Rather than trying to be visionaries predicting tomorrow, we put our energy into accurately perceiving the reality of today.” The second is from Anne Enright: “We don’t walk down the same street as the person walking beside us. All we can do is tell the other person what we see. We can point at things and try to name them. If we do this well, our friend can look at the world in a new way.” My “so what” this week is that observation, synthesis, feedback, and more feedback is the most important set of actions you can take to further transformation within and across your organization. And if you don’t think these actions are necessary, you’re probably learning a lot, making complicated slides, and walking around frustrated. Pls consider supporting hospice care below

The MedicAlert Foundation Australia charity is built on several trusted partnership starting in 1971. The leadership shown from the Adelaide Rotary Club has enabled MedicAlert's digital health information service over five decades to operate nationwide working with Healthcare Professionals, Aged and Community (NDIS) Care Providers, now assisting Police Departments respond when someone goes missing by providing vital & timely personal information in an emergency. The Safe and Found program has expanded this week from the partnership with Western Australia Police and now includes Northern Territory Police. By providing vital behaviour profiles for search and rescue talking and response, MedicAlert helps protect vulnerable Australians with cognitive challenges at high risk of going missing. #autism #dementia #medicalertau #datasaveslives #ndis #safeandfound

Check out the below excerpt taken from a September 1997 Fayetteville Observer article. "For-profit hospitals and other insurance-linked health-care operations are beginning to stagger all across the country. Their best days may already have passed. Meanwhile, the wave of the health-care future can be seen right here in Cumberland. The publicly owned Cape Fear Valley Medical Center announces formation of a non-profit support foundation, the Cape Fear Valley Medical Foundation, putting the independent volunteer power of the community behind the center's operations. With a board composed of distinguished medical men and high-profile businessmen, headed by Dr. Harold Godwin, the foundation is in its formative stage." The article continues to read, "To support the quality that has been achieved at CFVMC, the foundation approach offers a flexible, innovative?support resource. It can mobilize both the financial muscle of the community and the informed involvement of?people of enthusiasm and intelligence from throughout the community.?The foundation approach is a good down payment on a future when for-profit health care falls deeper into a?financial slough and publicly owned resources become more and more important. In the new era, Cumberland?County will be on the cutting edge.?The politicians and the medical personnel who are currently charged with policymaking oversight of CFVMC?should embrace the foundation as both ally and mentor. Historical Context: - Hospice care began as a volunteer-driven, non-profit movement in the 1970s - Became a Medicare benefit in 1982 with structured interdisciplinary care model ?? Current California Challenges: - Unprecedented growth: LA County saw 1,589% increase in hospice agencies since 2010 - Quality concerns: Of 2,000+ Medicare-participating hospices in CA, only 233 are fully compliant with quality reporting requirements - Geographic anomalies: 210 hospice agencies concentrated within 1 mile in Van Nuys area ?? Financial Impact: - $3B in Medicare payments to CA hospices (2023) - $1.4B went to non-compliant providers - 43% of 2023 payments went to agencies enrolled since 2019 This data highlights critical challenges in maintaining care quality and program integrity in our hospice system. New plans announced for a much needed ￡120 million in new funding for hospices - excellent news after a really tough year for the sector ?? Hospice UK

You have a choice when electing #HospiceCare. Consumer Reports recommends you choose a #nonprofit #hospice. Specifically, one with not-for-profit status and 20?or more years of experience; #PalliativeCare consultants who can begin care if you're not yet ready for hospice; an inpatient unit, where patients can go if symptoms can't be managed at home; the ability to provide care in nursing homes and assisted living residences; and #Medicare approval.
