When food is not safe, people cannot consume the nutrients they need to stay healthy, to learn, or to work. In the food packaging industry, ensuring that food remains safe from production to consumption is paramount. As part of the fiber-based packaging value chain, our chemistry solutions are developed with this in mind. Enhancing the protective qualities of fiber materials and ensuring the safety of paper and board in food contact applications is a definite key priority for Kemira. ?? One of our research focuses is to develop safe and sustainable alternatives to harmful PFAS substances that are used to create barrier properties in food packaging. We are proud to be among the 12 research and industry partners from 9 countries to collaborate on this topic on the ZeroF project funded by European Union and Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI. ???? ???? In response to a very large number of inquiries regarding jurisdictional differences across #Australia in relation to certified #compostable products being accepted or not accepted in kerbside collections such as?#FOGO, the ABA commissioned an independent review of the rationale used by Government instrumentalities in assessing whether or not to include certified compostable products such as caddy liners, food service ware and packaging. In some instances the decision to allow?#AS4736 and or #AS5810?certified compostable caddy liners but to exclude other certified compostable products made little sense if the objectives of Government is to drive towards more?#CircularEconomy?outcomes such as diversion of increasing amounts of food waste and other organics from landfill. The Research Paper entitled – “A review of the benefits and risks of including certified compostable packaging in organic food recovery systems”?was authored by Bill Grant,?Research Fellow, Future Regions Research Centre, Federation University, Ballarat. The Research Paper concluded amongst many positive benefits the following: This review concludes that compostable packaging items certified to Australian Standards AS4736 and AS5810 and meeting additional ABA certification requirements pose little risk in commercial composting systems and will likely increases the quantities of food organics recovered through FO/FOGO services.
