We’ll be following a fascinating lawsuit filed recently in federal court against the West Virginia Public Service Commission. It seeks to overturn the WV PSC’s direction to electric utilities to run their coal-fired power plants a pre-determined amount, even if it jacks up electricity bills for customers. https://lnkd.in/e3xgVFQY

The EPA’s Power Plant Rule threatens the welfare of our society. This is not an exaggeration. Reliable electricity is crucial for all aspects of the economy. Affordable, reliable electricity provides for the general health and wellbeing of people all across this county. The EPA rule cannot become effective. There are no viable alternatives.

Georgia Power Company filed its proposed long-term resource plan with state regulators today. As part of that plan, the utility is asking the public utility commission to approve the continued operation of three units at its two large coal-fired power plants, #Scherer and #Bowen, "at least through 2035." The utility did a cost benefit analysis and says that is the best option to meet projected increases in state electricity demand. But in keeping with longstanding utility practice, it doesn't plan to share the results with the public--unless "redacted" has a new meaning. If keeping the coal units open is truly the least cost option, the utility should be willing to show its work. If not, Georgia's utility commissioners should require it. It's past time for more transparency.

Order 1920 didn’t actually require Transmission planners to *select* and build regional transmission even if it was proven to meet the benefit cost test it refined. Neither did it break down the silos between economic and reliability planning processes that will allow for waste to persist. As such, hoping that Federal Energy Regulatory Commission takes this proposal to fix planning seriously despite incumbent protests

NEW! Polling shows Texans wants an "all of the above" approach when it comes to energy and strongly oppose federal efforts to ban gas-powered vehicles, with a supermajority of likely voters saying this will be an important issue for them when deciding who to vote for. From TAB President & CEO Glenn Hamer: "This new polling makes one thing clear: Texans want an 'all of the above' energy policy that utilizes our abundant fossil fuel resources while simultaneously investing in and developing renewable technologies. Texans overwhelmingly support an energy policy that embraces diversity in energy sources, which not only ensures energy security but also fosters economic growth and innovation. Texas Association of Business promotes commonsense policies that allow for consumer choice, limit burdensome regulations, support a diversified energy environment, and help us prepare for a prosperous future.” Read TAB's full statement and see additional poll highlights here: https://lnkd.in/gswnyJGQ

Can we talk about this? The states supporting FERC's Order No. 1920 assert that the outcome of the order "will be a lower delivered cost of energy for the ratepayers of our States." How would someone go about proving (or refuting) that claim? More broadly, is FERC held to any standard of proof when it issues sweeping orders under section 206 of the Federal Power Act (like with 1920)? https://lnkd.in/ebtuVBea

That’s because?FERC?Order?1920?requires that regional grid plans assess a?common set of benefits that come from regional transmission projects and allocate the costs of paying for those projects across all members of the region.
