Haines: Mentoring vital to bridging relationship gap for youth in foster care - https://lnkd.in/ezudctKi By Christina Haines, Reprinted from the Boston Herald As adults, we have autonomy in our relationships. Youth in foster care have much less control over theirs. Many of their relationships with adults — biological family, foster caregivers, teachers, social workers, and other professionals — are directed by policies and laws that determine their parameters. It's that time of year again! School is back in session, and while some children are excited to see their friends, children in #FosterCare may be anxious. Kids in foster care bounce between 3-4 different homes on average. Social workers and judges try to keep them within their original school district, but that often isn't possible due to limited foster homes. While any child may struggle to adjust to a #NewSchool, major changes like this become even more difficult for kids in foster care. In our blog, we look at the challenges of starting a new school for kids in foster care and how to support their transition. By promoting a sense of stability, #FosterParents (and any parent!) can help their children thrive in a new school. #ChildWelfare #ForOthers #ForOthersCollective

I'm thrilled to share an insightful report, "Destination Graduation: Investing in the Educational Attainment of California’s Youth in Foster Care." This article sheds light on the significant challenges faced by youth in foster care, including trauma, systemic racism, and barriers to academic support. Despite these obstacles, the report highlights promising practices like intensive one-on-one interventions to help these resilient individuals pursue their educational dreams. As someone deeply passionate about supporting foster youth in achieving post-secondary success, I find this report both enlightening and motivating. Let's continue to advocate for and invest in the future of these incredible young people!

When children are uprooted from everything they know and love, the systems charged with their care and cultivation must equip them with the tools they need to succeed. New York’s schools and foster care agencies are failing to do so. A new report from Next100 and Chantal Hinds features insight from individuals with lived experience in the foster system to understand how schools and agencies can better address their unique challenges and support their educational achievement. The report also includes first-hand testimonies from individuals in the foster system and calls for schools to work collaboratively with students, parents, foster parents, and foster care agencies to ensure that students have the tools they need to succeed. https://lnkd.in/ejBFPnyx.?
