If You’re Challenged By Emotions, You May Lack an Important Skillset

It’s both heartbreaking and frustrating to witness people continuously struggling with their emotions. Little do such folks seem to realize that doing so is completely unnecessary and also a rather unhealthy self-inflicted pattern for which to remain trapped.

Healthy emotional processing and regulation is a skillset that must be learned and regularly practiced. It’s not something that will magically develop just by talking about, writing about, or even reading about. You have to take real and repetitive action to build this skillset to a high level of proficiency.

Emotional Mastery 101

The proven formula that I utilize with clients for transcending emotions that are keeping you trapped is to:

1.??? Identify the root cause of whatever is triggering you. Otherwise, every time that you experience anything that feels even remotely similar to the original cause of your particular unhealthy emotional pattern, you will be triggered and fall victim to the repeating pattern …over and over again like an anxious hamster stuck on an exhausting wheel of misery.

2.??? Once you become self-aware of your unique why for being at the mercy of your particular heavy emotions, you can begin to shift yourself out of your unhealthy pattern. By using this newfound knowledge that applies specifically to you, early on you’re able to more easily notice when troubling emotions begin to become activated.

3.??? The next step, and the one that so many people tend to skip over, is to effectively process the energy of the heavy emotions in the moment that they are occurring. Not waiting. Not shoving the emotions down. Not commiserating or complaining to a friend who has the same unhealthy pattern. Not distracting yourself with equally unhealthy diversions. Not exploding. But, instead, consciously and intentionally processing your emotions so that you calm your nervous system and reconnect yourself back to the logical and rational part of your brain.

Depending upon the particular emotions that have a tendency to plague you, there are specific techniques that you can use, in the moment, to skillfully regulate your emotional temperature and restore yourself back to a self-empowered state of inner peace and calm versus being a victim to your emotions …and the ensuing drama that likely follows.

Emotions are Like Dashboard Lights, Give In or Ignore Them at Your Peril

Something that is helpful to keep in mind is that emotions are akin to dashboard lights signaling to you that something requires your attention in order to address and resolve now so that you are able to move forward productively without further incident.

Wishing, hoping, ignoring, or whining and complaining about your challenging heavy emotions won’t make them go away. Only through true self-awareness, desire and actual ongoing efforts are you able to master the crucial skillset of healthy emotional processing and regulation.

The intensity of our feelings when emotional flooding happens can really be overwhelming, especially when we don't have the coping skills necessary to navigate the chemical and hormonal tsunami that hits us when we get triggered.
