Disney's omnidirectional floor takes us one step closer to living Ready Player One - a floor for gaming, workouts, and exploring 3D worlds by physically moving through the space. We’re entering phase 2 of the great theme park wars. Is Comcast’s 3rd gate Epic Universe going to take another bite out of The Walt Disney Company as they battle for vacation days from family travelers? And how will Disney Parks respond? After the success of Harry Potter, Disney responded with Avatar, betting big on the successful box office of the film, despite it lacking the same cultural significance of Harry Potter. Do they go for significant refurbishments, expansions to the park or…a fifth gate? Will they continue to lean on their IP or focus on delivering a modern and unique experience? Ultimately, theme park enthusiasts will win from all the upcoming developments in the next decade.

Will the plans for Universal's new theme park, Epic Universe, draw away a significant number of visitors from Disney World? According to?The Wall Street Journal, Epic Universe is expected to be fully open by Memorial Day 2025, well ahead of schedule. Additionally, the report notes that in order to prevent overcrowding, Universal is going to restrict access to Epic Universe to visitors who purchase multi-day passes at the park. That would discourage tourists from spending additional time and money at Disney World. Research firm MoffettNathanson LLC estimates that Epic Universe alone could draw 1 million visitors away from Disney's parks, while increasing attendance at Universal's other theme parks by over 8 million in 2025 and 2026. #EpicUniverse #capturerate #criticalmass Walt Disney World. We don't know all the details on valuation and so forth but $1.5b seems like a great deal for Disney. Epic likely at a better valuation than its been at in some time (and allegedly they needed the cash). But a few points of comparison: Playdom - over $700m Club Penguin – $350m, but earn out would have been 2x Hong Kong Disneyland – $3.5b Spiderman 2 console (funded by Sony) – $300m So Disney gets a virtual Disneyland on the hottest real estate in the metaverse PLUS equity in the underlying company for $1.5b which is basically 2x Playdom or 1/2 Hong Kong Disneyland. The?Super?Bowl?just had its first AR flyover! Allegiant Stadium is a domed stadium, so folks inside couldn't witness the traditional Thunderbirds flyover that happens every year. It's crazy to think that this might be the first mixed reality experience in the Big Game. Keep me honest if not. We also created an at-home experience where everyone could guide a mini flyover above their snacks. Both builds used spatial audio, which made the illusion of a real flight more authentic. The closer the aircraft got to you, the louder it got. By flipping to the front camera, viewers were transformed into one of the Thunderbirds pilots flying over Vegas. This was a pretty cool experience, and I'm excited for more location-based AR/MR in live events. We've seen the NFL Toy Story and Nickelodeon integration on TV screens, but bringing it to the stadium adds a whole new layer to it. Could this be the start of a new trend? What kind of wizardry is this? This past summer, theme parks had a rough ride as revenues took a dive deep into splash mountain thanks to inflation and high costs. That's not stopping Universal's plan to open its new Epic Universe theme park in Florida anchored by a new Harry Potter attraction. And, pit it against Disney. Everyone was taking the Family Budget Ride. Disney, Universal and Six Flags were exactly the happiest place on Earth as people skipped amusement parks in favor of international trips and cruises. The Magic Kingdom, Disney’s flagship theme park in Florida, certainly wasn't immune. Universal's Epic Universe is likely to make it even harder for Disney to recapture revenue magic who's now upped its opening day to Memorial Day weekend 2025. Mickey will have his hand's full with this wizard battle. Universal is betting its Harry Potter attraction will resonate with tourists and park enthusiasts, and will have five different immersive “worlds”:?Celestial Park,?How to Train Your Dragon - Isle of Berk,?Super Nintendo World,?and Dark Universe, as well as?The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic. For its part, Disney is planning is a major expansion that will include a new themed area dedicated to classic Disney villains and another based on Pixar's 'Cars' movies, according to the New York Times. Additionally, the Disneyland Resort in California will introduce a water-based 'Avatar' ride and its first 'Coco' attraction." Despite all that, the biggest challenge for the theme park industry may be ticket prices.
