The Liberal Democrats launched the first of the party manifestos today. It includes a cross-government plan to end all forms of homelessness, plus a significant social housing programme and the scrapping of the archaic Vagrancy Act. With homelessness at record levels these manifesto proposals would put us on the path to tackling this growing crisis and offer hope to the thousands facing the injustice of being without a safe home. We now need to see the same level of ambition from the other major parties with clear commitments to end all forms of homelessness for good. https://lnkd.in/gcqXc29E

This article suggests that Clare O'Neil has been made the new Federal minister for housing and homelessness because it is a portfolio that needed a stronger communicator at a time when anger about housing is at record highs. In 2024 rough sleeping and statutory homelessness are at all time highs. The cost of living crisis and the lack of affordable and appropriate housing are pushing more and more people onto the streets and making it harder for people to move on from rough sleeping. Being unhoused is enough of a punishment. Last week, the Supreme Court decided in Grants Pass v. Johnson that communities nationwide should be able to fine, ticket or arrest individuals experiencing homelessness, even when adequate shelter is not accessible. Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor London Breed have expressed approval for this ruling, which may impact unhoused communities in San Francisco. We stand in solidarity with our allies and fellow civil rights groups like the Coalition On Homelessness and the ACLU of Northern California in opposing this decision. Homelessness is not solved by criminalization, but rather, by safe and affordable housing. This ruling diverts attention from the real issues: lack of affordable housing, inadequate social services, and systemic inequalities. We urge our leaders to focus on proven strategies like permanent supportive housing and addressing the underlying causes of housing insecurity and homelessness.
