A big thank you to Ula for yesterday's Street Wisdom Walk around Spitalfields, which not only set the tone for the rest of my day but helped me 'arrive' back in London with the same awe and wonder kindled??by my time in Tangier for HoBB's 2024 event last week. I won't attempt to summarise 'Between the Two of Us', so deftly captured by HoBB's Editorial Director, Martha Schabas, in her reflections here: https://lnkd.in/eDiu32Pc Instead, here are a few things I especially appreciated... ??Experiencing 'Between the Two of Us' through multiple perspectives: of those attending for the first time; from speakers in preparation and those fresh from the stage; those returning to Tangier from overseas; and those retracing the steps of generations before them. ?? How liberating it can be when *everything* is unfamiliar. I definitely felt my curiosity and attention span dial up several levels. ?The joy of holding routine lightly and going with the flow. Turns out the opposite of planning = dancing into the small hours, impromptu dinners, discovering diverse stories of Morocco past and present, and deep talk over breakfast. ?? The power of film to deepen your connection to a place. I first saw Maryam Touzani's 'The Blue Caftan' in London, but seeing it again at Cinema Rif was a far more visceral experience after several days exploring the city. Several explorative questions I've brought home with me... ~ What 'fruit' would you scale that tree to attain? ~ What's whispering to you from the future? ~ What mask is it time to put down? And comforting thoughts that I'm embracing... "Stories about anyone, told beautifully, travel." "Process cannot be channelled into an algorithm; it requires time, care, and intuition." "There is always a tale between the two of us, the key is curiosity." Thanks to the whole HoBB team + volunteers for creating a 'curiosity container' ?? for conversation and constructive provocation within a fascinating city.

Major events are usually very crowded with tens to hundreds of thousands of attendees. It is this mass congregation of people that attract the unwelcomed attention of terrorists who would happily die to generate horrendous casualties & worldwide media attention. Most major events in Singapore would involve internationally famous entities like Taylor Swift (300,000 fans attended the 6-sold out concerts) or the hosting of popular sports events like the F1 (averaging 280,000 attendees for the 3-day event). For terrorists, having an international audience is the icing on the cake. Major entertainment, sports & religious events are considered soft targets because strict access control protocols & the usual physical security measures normally applied to secure such a location cannot be implemented. Besides a terrorist attack, crowds are also very vulnerable to disturbances which can generate panic & crowd disasters. Whenever crowds are involved, security & event planners need to work hand-in-hand to identify & mitigate risks as far out from the event as possible. Nothing is inconsequential. Emergency plans & other contingencies need to be drawn up & well rehearsed. Issues like communication, signages, transport & the last mile, etc., need to be carefully thought through. There is no holding back a stampeding crowd of tens or hundreds of thousands of people who have got it in their minds (herd mentality) to immediately get out of the event, get away from the area. Deaths are due to compressive asphyxia, not by trampling.?Evidence of bent steel railings after several fatal crowd incidents show that forces of more than 4500 N (1,000 lbs) occurred. Forces are due to pushing & the domino effect of people leaning against each other. Compressive asphyxia occurred from people being stacked up vertically, one on top of the other. In the 1971 Ibrox Park soccer stadium incident, police reported that the pile of bodies was 3m high. At this height, people on the bottom would experience chest pressures of 3600-4000 N (800-900 lbs), assuming half this weight was concentrated in the upper body area. Horizontal forces sufficient to cause compressive asphyxia is more dynamic as people push against each other to obtain breathing space. In the 1979 Cincinnati rock concert incident, a line of bodies was found approximately 9m from a wall near the entrance. This indicates that crowd pressures probably came from both directions as rear ranks pressed forward & front ranks pushed off the wall. In a Australian Building Technology Centre study, 3 people in a combined leaning & pushing posture developed a force of 1370 N (306 lbs). In simulated "panic" situations, just 5 people were capable of developing forces measuring 3430 N (766 lbs). In a crowd, a sizeable explosion or two, gunshots fired into the crowd, the release of noxious substances or CBR warfare agents or attacks with incendiary devices are sufficient to cause a panic & it is all downhill from there.
