We recently partnered with United Way Manitowoc County to assemble 250 hygiene kits for homeless individuals in Manitowoc County. Alex Hunt, executive director at The Haven of Manitowoc County, a local men's homeless shelter, joined us and shared valuable insights on the vital services they provide for men in need. It was an inspiring collaboration, and we're proud to contribute to such an important cause that supports dignity and care in our community.

Take action ?? email your representatives today! Join us in requesting a federal funding expansion for shelters and safe haven programs for women and children. By clicking this link–– https://lnkd.in/gkKQAPxe ––you can quickly send a message to your members of Congress on behalf of the more than 1.2 million women and 2.5 million children experiencing homelessness in the United States every year. WLP's Executive Director, Jennifer Hanlon Wigon, is a member of the Board of Directors for the National Women's Shelter Network, which has submitted a request for a $55,000,000 increase to Emergency Solution Grants. This funding has a 15% set aside of Formula Grant funds to be directed to women’s and children’s shelter and safe haven programs in the Fiscal Year 2025 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (T-HUD) Appropriations Bill. Women and children often encounter traumatic life events prior to experiencing homelessness and require high-special-need services to address the impacts of gender-based violence and trauma. Frontline organizations are facing significant challenges in responding to growing homelessness rates. Additional funding is crucial for basic operations, human services, and enriched supportive services that facilitate successful transitions to long-term stable housing. Collectively, we hold the power to save and change the lives of countless women and children across the nation.

Did you know? In 2023, Colorado had the nation's 10th highest number of human trafficking reports. Common Sense Institute did a study of the amount of cases reported in 2023 throughout the United States and Colorado ranked 10th highest out of the rest of the states. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for awareness and action among Coloradans and the need for support of nonprofits making a difference for this cause. At Covered Colorado, we empower trafficking survivors over the age of 18 toward healing and self-sufficiency. In March of 2025, we will be opening our second safe house focusing on crisis care for trafficking survivors. We have heard from our local partners in law enforcement and other agencies in the state, crisis cases are going up. We at Covered Colorado are determined to meet this need that Colorado is experiencing. We couldn't do this important work without the help of the community. Please contact the City Council here in Des Moines (emails located on this shared post) with your advocacy and voice sharing concerns around criminalizing homelessness. This is a systemic issue and nothing less than that. The walls inside of government buildings have decided that people are not worthy of dignity and compassion, but I know that's not true, and I believe that the good in humanity would agree. The next Des Moines City Council meeting is Monday, August 19th at 5pm. Please reach out to these folks and let them know how harsh this truly is. Congressman Zach Nunn is donating money to a youth shelter stating that "Every young person deserves a home" - but young or not, everyone deserves shelter. In the social work/human services realm, you learn a lot about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. The first important item to note is that for any HUMANS well-being, their physiological needs must be met - guess what goes under that category? Shelter. We are in a housing crisis, we are in an economic crisis, the last thing unhoused people need, are more fines and put in jail. Being unhoused is not a crime. If anything, making decisions about people who have no seat at the table, is the crime. Please please please, use your voice. Empower human beings. Be a good and KIND human. Unhoused homies deserve seats at the table, I hope you show up for them too.
THANK YOU! We were able to raise $2,500.00+ worth of food, water, & supplies w/ your help. Multiple truck loads were delivered to community fridges all over town. We talked w/ a LOT of people in the last few days & haven't met a single person in favor of the homeless criminalization ordinance being proposed. I believe people generally want to help & lift each other up. The drive today sends a message that Iowans don't believe in kicking people when they're down. Please contact our elected officials to say we don't agree w/ arresting, fining, & bulldozing people in need. SPREAD LOVE! Send a quick email to share your voice for the vote coming soon: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]

Florida Considers Using Camps as Humane Solution for Homelessness https://lnkd.in/eNt3BQH6 Florida is facing a growing homeless crisis due to a lack of affordable housing. This situation leaves many people and families with no choice but to sleep in public spaces, parks, or their vehicles. The crisis affects a wide range of individuals, including those struggling with mental health and substance abuse, families with children, and military veterans. It is essential to develop effective solutions to address the symptoms and root causes of this complex problem. Recently, Florida has considered using camps as a humane solution for homelessness. However, it is important to remember that homeless individuals require specific forms of support and interventions to cater to their unique needs.
