In 2007, Congress designated September 25 as the National Day of Remembrance for Homicide Victims. Robert and Charlotte Hullinger, of Cincinnati, formed Parents of Murdered Children following the 1978 murder of their 19-year-old daughter, Lisa, while she was studying in Germany. The annual day of observance is on the date Lisa was murdered. This day gives us all the opportunity to remember those lost to homicide, and honor their memories. We focus on the impact of murder on families, and communities, and ways to support and serve survivors. The day also honors the work of organizations that provide services, including support, advocacy, and counseling for families, individuals and communities coping with homicide-related deaths. In 2023, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) received more than 18,400 reports of possible child sex trafficking. But the true number is likely much higher. Why? Trafficking is often underreported due to the fear, manipulation, and control that traffickers hold over their victims. Children may not recognize they’re being exploited, or they’re too scared to ask for help. Many cases go unseen, especially in vulnerable communities. We must act now. Operation Santa's S.L.E.D., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is launching its annual campaign to support law enforcement families facing extraordinary challenges. This year, we're supporting nine law enforcement families across New York State, including 23 children who have experienced profound loss and hardship. Our campaign goal is $23,000 - representing $1,000 per child for both holiday gifts and family support. The families we're supporting this year have faced devastating circumstances: ? Three line-of-duty deaths ? Two officers with traumatic brain injuries ? One off-duty motorcycle fatality ? One loss due to respiratory illness complications ? One death by suicide ?
